"In the US, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals report higher rates of depression compared with heterosexual and cisgender persons. To date, little is known about the mental health of LGBT adults in Thailand. Here, we examined rates and correlates of depression among a volunteer sample of Thai LGBTs. Data were collected as part of a larger cross-sectional survey study. Standardized measures of sexual orientation and gender identity, stress, coping style, and minority stressors were completed. Of the 411 participants, 40.3% met the criteria for depression. In multivariate analyses, the combined influences of sociodemographic factors, general stress, coping strategies, and minority-specific stress variables explained 47.2% of the variance in depression scores (F[16,367]= 20.48, p<.001). Correlates of depression included coping strategies and minority-specific stressors, including experiences of victimization, discrimination, and level of identity concealment. Study findings have implications for psychiatric nursing practice and the development of intervention research."

"Tulisan ini menganalisis bagaimana gay dan transgender dalam dua dunia yang berbeda, secara sosial dan politik, yaitu Indonesia dan Eropa Barat, aktif berparitsipasi dalam pembentukan subjektivitasnya. Subjektivitas gender dalam kajian ini terkait dan tak dapat dipisahkan dari seksualitas, agam, hubungan romatis mereka dengan laki-laki dari Eropa Barat dan tali ikatan persaudaraan mereka dengan keluarga mereka di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa anggota komunitas LGBT diaspora Indonesia mengartikulasikan identitasnya melalui TikTok dengan menunjukkan identitasnya secara gamblang sebagai pria gay. Selain itu, mereka juga menggunakan strategi lain seperti membuat video-video parodi tentang identitasnya sebagai pria gay, membuat video menari dan melakukan lip-sync dengan mengikuti lagu-lagu yang viral, menunjukkan kebersamaan dengan keluarganya, memperlihatkan keseharian yang tidak berhubungan dengan homoseksual, mengedukasi pengguna TikTok tentang aspek yang tidak berhubungan dengan homoseksual, menjelaskan momen-momen penting sebagai pria gay yang tinggal di negara yang melegalkan komunitas LGBT, hingga merespons secara serius pertanyaan atau pernyataan yang hadir dari netizen asal Indonesia. Artikulasi identitas yang menghasilkan persekusi ini dihadapi dengan menggunakan dua strategi: visibilitas sebagai gay dengan menjelaskan pandangan anggota komunitas LGBT tentang betapa “anehnya” penampilan atau perilaku mereka serta melakukan mock impoliteness sebagai upaya yang memerlukan interaksi berupa percakapan atau perilaku yang dapat dievaluasi sebagai ketidaksopanan oleh komunitas LGBT.

In Indonesia, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community is still considered a threat to national culture and as a cause of natural catastrophes. As a result, many have chosen to migrate to other nations and become diasporas. How do LGBT Indonesian diaspora members articulate their identities in this instance? What sorts of persecution were they subjected to? This study investigates how two Indonesian LGBT diaspora individuals articulate their identities in response to persecution. This study found that gay men in the Indonesian diaspora utilize TikTok to articulate their identities. They also make parody videos about their gay men identities, dance and lip-sync to viral songs, show togetherness with their families, show aspects of daily life unrelated to homosexuality, educate TikTok users about non-homosexual aspects, explain significant moments as gay men living in a country where the LGBT community is legal, and take negativity seriously. Two strategies are employed to combat the articulation of identities that leads to persecution: visibility as gay by explaining how “strange” their appearance or behavior is in the eyes of the LGBT community and mock impoliteness by engaging in conversation or behavior that the LGBT community would consider impolite."

"A feminist sociologist by training, Carla A. Pfeffer studies women whose boyfriends and husbands have not always been recognized as men in the world. The transgender partners of the women Pfeffer interviews often-but not always-take testosterone and/or pursue masculinizing surgeries in order to bring their bodies and others views of them into greater alignment with their identities as men. This, however, may present a unique dilemma for their nontransgender (or cisgender) women partners, many of whom self-identify as lesbian or as queer. The women Pfeffer interviews describe being suddenly perceived as part of an unremarkably heterosexual couple once their transgender partners are recognized by others as men. This may result in social advantages such as inclusion in family gatherings, greater social acceptance by strangers, and the ability to join regulated social institutions. However, these women also describe feeling invisible as they are pushed out of gay and lesbian social spaces and sometimes left unsure of how to describe their own sexual identities and the relationships they have with their transgender partners. In this gripping set of narrative accounts, Pfeffer urges readers to rethink their assumptions about just who and what gets to count as a real family in the 21st century. Moreover, she considers what might be learned through closer attention to (and awareness of) various postmodern reconfigurations of embodiment, families, partnerships, and identity that may bring new meanings to contemporary social life not just for the partners of transgender people, but for everyone."

"ABSTRAKSebagai salah satu episode paling populer dari serial televisi fiksi ilmiah asal Inggris, San Junipero dipandang sebagai salah satu episode serial Black Mirror yang menarik untuk dianalisis, terlebih dari segi sains dan teknologi, karena adanya penggunaan teknologi virtual canggih didalamnya. Meskipun demikian, pembahasan tentang isu-isu LGBT dalam serial televisi fiksi seperti ilmiah Black Mirror masih jarang ditemukan. Dengan menggunakan metode analisis mise-en-scènes untuk menelaah aspek-aspek sinematografis seperti latar, warna, kostum, teknik kamera, serta akting, sekaligus metode analisis literatur untuk menelaah keberadaan serta karakteristik tokoh-tokoh LGBT di dalamnya, tulisan ini mencoba menelaah aspek-aspek heteronormatif yang masih bertahan di balik imej celebration of queerness yang diakui oleh para penggemar episode ini. Dari hasil analisis, nilai-nilai heteronormativitas masih tercermin di dalam episode ini karena, faktanya, kedua karakter LGBT di dalamnya masih ditampilkan secara stereotipikal. Eksistensi karakter-karakter LGBT di dalam episode ini juga ternyata sesuai dengan kritik Rich (1980) tentang latar belakang eksistensi lesbian yang berkaitan dengan heteronormativitas.

ABSTRACTAs one of the episodes from the famous sci-fi British TV series, San Junipero has become one of the most interesting episodes from Black Mirror series to be analyzed, specifically from the perspective of science and technology, for its mind-blowing VR-based invention. Nevertheless, the aspect of gender and LGBT issues has not been commonly explored in sci-fi literature like Black Mirror. Using mise-en-scène as an approach to analyze some of the cinematographic elements, (setting, color, costume, camera work and performance) as well as analyzing the queer characters, this article tries to identify the heteronormative elements that still persist under the image of a celebration of queerness the episode has received from the fans. Apparently, heteronormativity is still depicted in the episode for the fact that the queer characters are still portrayed rather stereotypically according to several studies about the representation of queer characters in the media discussed by Seifs (2013). As a heterotopia, according to Foucaults (1986), the establishment of the queer characters in San Junipero also fit Richs (1980) critique towards the lesbian existence in relation to compulsory heteronormativity that queer romance exists through melancholy. Nevertheless, not all aspects in the episode scream pure heteronormativity. Although at first glance it seems stereotypical, the queer characters appearance seem to help establishing a non-stereotypical identity in female-female relationship."

"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan hal yang dilakukan oleh seorang biseksual setelah melewati terjadinya proses coming out kepada lingkungan sekitarnya. Penelitian ini berangkat dari konsep agensi yang dikemukakan oleh Archer yang mengartikan agensi sebagai refleksi bagi seseorang untuk bisa mengembangkan dirinya. Konsep agensi yang digunakan adalah transformative agency yang diartikan sebagai adanya pertemuan antara agensi dan struktur, di mana agensi ini mempunyai kemampuan untuk berstrategi menghadapi struktur yang ada setelah adanya interaksi sosial dengan agen lainnya. Penelitian ini beragumen bahwa setelah melakukan proses coming out, agensi ini menghadapi konsekuensi yang ada karena struktur heteronormatif, sehingga individu-individu biseksual ini ada keinginan untuk bisa menegosiasi struktur heteronormatif dalam menghadapi penolakan, stigma, dan menjalani identitas sebagai biseksual. Temuan penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa seorang biseksual belum bisa menggunakan kemampuan sepenuhnya sebagai transformative agency untuk mengubah struktur heteronormatif yang ada. Penelitian ini menggunakan studi kualitatif dengan melakukan wawancara mendalam.

This study aims to explain what a bisexual person is going to do after they coming out to the people around them. This study is based on the concept of agency by Archer who describe agency as a reflection of a person to develop themselves. The concept of agency that used in this study is transformative agency, when agency and structure meets and develop a capability to make a strategy to confront the structure in some environment after the social interaction is happening with another agents. This study argues that after the process of coming out, the agency of bisexual people is going to dealt with some consequences because of the existence of heteronormative structure in their everyday life. Therefore, a bisexual person have a power to negotiate the heteronormative structure when they dealt with rejection, facing some stigma about bisexual people and also build their bisexual identity. This study confirms that a bisexual person can not use their full potential as a transformative agency to negotiate or change the heteronormative structure. This study used qualitative approaches with in depth interview method."

"Tesis ini membahas representasi media bagi kelompok minoritas Amerika Serikat dengan menganalisis fenomena kemunculan gerakan LGBT Fans Deserve Better pasca kematian tokoh Lexa dalam serial televisi The 100. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis konten berbasis resepsi untuk melihat faktor yang menyebabkan tokoh Lexa sangat berpengaruh bagi kelompok LGBT dan pentingnya representasi media bagi kelompok minoritas Amerika Serikat.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa besarnya pengaruh Lexa merupakan hasil dari keberhasilan serial televisi The 100 merepresentasikan kelompok LGBT melalui penokohan Lexa. Keberhasilan ini ditunjukkan oleh kemampuan Lexa menunjukkan visibilitas kelompok LGBT yang membantu upaya mencari pengakuan dan membenarkan misrecognition seperti yang terlihat dari pemaknaan Lexa oleh kelompok LGBT melalui lsquo;bahasa rsquo; yang beredar. Gerakan LGBT Fans Deserve Better merupakan imbas dari kekecewaan dan kemarahaan akan terenggutnya representasi yang dianggap terbaik dan ekspektasi besar yang digantungkan kepada tokoh Lexa.

This study examines the importance of media representation for minority groups in The United States of America based on a character in the TV series, The 100. The death of the character, Lexa, initated a movement called LGBT Fans Deserve Better, which demands for positive LGBT representations on television. This study uses qualitative approach and a reception based content analysis method to examine the reasons why the LGBT community is strongly affected by the character and her death. The data collected include tweets, tumblr posts, and website content.

The findings show that Lexa rsquo s powerful influence is the result of The 100 rsquo s success in representing LGBT community through her character. This success is demonstrated by her ability to show LGBT community visibility, which in turns helps them find a recognition and rectify the misrepresentaion of their community. LGBT Fans Deserve Better movement is a result of the disappointment and the outrage of the community brought by Lexa rsquo s death, for Lexa is perceived as the best representation for the community."
