ABSTRACT
There are several problems that occur in urban families, especially newly couples, in building their housing career, among others, the problem of limited selection of appropriate housing, particularly for those with low incomes. Stock problem on housing is still predominantly from the formal sector. This research, which takes place in South Tangerang, is trying to disclose the informal aspect of home seekers, particularly in terms of preference.
The focus of this research is the correlation between affordability and the choice of co-residence of the families in urban areas, and its spacial effect. The method adopted to uncover this phenomenon is a mixed method primarily quantitative and qualitative method to reveal signification. The data collection is carried out through questionnaires, interviews, and observations conducted on adult couples with low incomes and as control sample, on senior citizens and old couples with middle incomes. The results have shown that there is a positive correlation between income with the choice of co-residence, that is the greater the income, the longer the duration of co-residence. Other findings on senior citizens and old couples with middle incomes is that income affects their housing career, that is the greater the household incomes, the more improved the housing career. In terms of spatiality, the correlation between income and co-residence affects their living space, living arrangements and the dynamics that occur within it.

"The papers published in this special issue of the Asia-Pacific Population Journal were presented at the international conference ?Population and Development in Asia: Critical Issues for a Sustainable Future?, held from 20 to 22 March 2006 in Phuket, Thailand. The panel on ?Ageing and Development? was one of the 10 panels.
This book examines the future surge in Asian families. Because of older adults in these societies will have higher levels of education and standards of living, there are some concerns that traditional support for elderly may fade. Therefore, promoting active ageing may be one important means to reduce the dependence of older persons on the younger population.
Rapid population ageing in Asia is accompanied by rapid changes in socio-economic and political developments. This will in turn affect living arrangements of older persons while family has traditionally been the pillar of support for this segment of the population in Asia, some studies have shown that modernization and urbanization tend to affect the level and quality o f this familial support."

"Contrary to the hypothesis, the percentage of older persons co-residing with the children was found to be higher in districts with more advanced stages of economic development. In rural areas, older persons were, by contrast, more likely not to co-reside with their children."
