Abstrak :
Tesis ini membahas tentang isu lingkungan sebagai isu yang tengah berkembang dan menarik perhatian publik dunia dalam beberapa tahun terakhir. Sebagai salah satu negara yang masih memiliki hutan terbesar di dunia, Indonesia kini menjadi target kampanye kalangan pemerhati lingkungan, khususnya Non Government Organization (NGO). NGO memainkan peranan yang signifikan dalam mengidentifikasi dan mendefinisikan masalah-masalah lingkungan dan sosial. NGO kemudian menempatkan dirinya untuk terlibat dalam agenda setting untuk negosiasi politik dan proses pengambilan keputusan. Kampanye yang dilakukan oleh NGO lingkungan terhadap produk hasil hutan Indonesia dimaksudkan untuk membentuk opini publik yang negatif terhadap produk hasil hutan di Indonesia. Akibatnya, produk hasil hutan Indonesia dipertanyakan di dunia internasional. Hal tersebut diakomodasi melalui pemberitaan oleh media massa, terutama media internasional. Media telah menjadi jembatan arus informasi. Berita yang sampai kepada publik akan memiliki banyak penafsiran dan tanggapan yang berbeda, bergantung pada gaya bahasa dan cara penyampaian media. Oleh karena itu, peran media menjadi sangat vital karena bertanggung jawab dalam membentuk opini publik. ......This thesis discusses about environmental issues as a growing issue and attracts public attention in recent years. As one of the countries that still have the biggest forest in the world, Indonesia has become the target of environmentalists campaigns, especially the Non-Government Organization (NGO). NGOs play a significant role in identifying and defining issues of environmental and social problems. NGO then put itself to get involved in agenda setting for political negotiations and decision-making processes. Campaign by the environmental NGO is intended to establish negative public opinion toward Indonesian forest products. As a result, Indonesian forest products in the international market are questionable. This is accommodated through the news by the media, especially the international media. Media has become the bridge of information flow. News to the public will have a lot of different interpretations and responses depend on the style and how the media deliver the information. Therefore, the role of the media is vital because it is responsible in establishing public opinion.

The media and the public explores the ways a range of media, from the press to television to the Internet, have constructed and represented the public. Provides a new synthesis of recent research exploring the relationship between media and their publics Identifies ways in which different publics are subverting the gatekeeping of mainstream media in order to find a voice and communicate with others Situates contemporary media, public discourse and relationships in an historical context in order to show the origin of contemporary public/political engagement Creates a theoretical expansion on the role of the media in accessing or denying the articulation of public voices, and the ways in which publics are harnessing new media formats to produce richer and more complex forms of political engagement.
