"Al Shabaab, sebuah insurgensi di Somalia dengan tujuan utama yang nasionalis (selain tujuan transnasionalis dan Islami), membuat keputusan untuk bekerjasama dengan Al Qaeda pada tahun 2008. Keputusan tersebut sangat kontras dengan perilaku Al Shabaab sebelumnya. Ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perubahan signifikan baik secara internal maupun eksternal. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengungkap faktor-faktor di balik keputusan Al Shabaab, dengan menggunakan metode process-tracing secara retrospektif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa deklarasi unifikasi Al Shabaab-Al Qaeda pada Agustus 2008 terjadi karena rangkaian peristiwa yang berdasarkan pada tiga faktor berikut: (1) Realisasi ideologi Salafi, (2) Perubahan pemimpin, dan (3) Ketidakmampuan Al Shabaab untuk menstabilkan kondisi kekerasan yang memburuk di Somalia.......Al Shabaab, a Somalian insurgency with predominantly nationalistic causes (alongside transnationalistic and Islamic preferences) made the choice to fight on behalf of Al Qaeda in 2008. The decision to do so contrasted with how Al Shabaab behaved previously, indicating that there were some serious changes either internally or externally. This study aims to uncover factors that contributed to Al Shabaab‟s decision through the use of process-tracing in retrospective. The results show that Al Shabaab‟s declaration of unification with Al Qaeda in August 2008 was brought about a series of events that traced back to three core factors: (1) The realization of a Salafi ideology, (2) The shift to a radical leadership, and (3) The inability of Al Shabaab to manage the increasingly violent Somalian situation."

"Kekurangan tenaga kerja produktif Jepang akibat rendahnya angka kelahiran, menginisisasi pemerintah Jepang membuka kesempatan bagi tenaga kerja asing melalui skema program TITP (Technical Internship Training Program). Peluang ini dimanfaatkan oleh Lulusan Sarjana Sastra Jepang untuk memasuki pasar tenaga kerja Jepang, walaupun di sektor low-skilled. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki faktor-faktor yang dipertimbangkan pada keputusan tenaga kerja terdidik untuk melakukan program magang ke Jepang melalui skema TITP, serta bagaimna manfaat yang didapatkan setelah melakukan program magang tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif-fenomenologi dengan wawancara mendalam terhadap 5 orang eks-pemagang yang berpendidikan Sarjana lulusan Universitas Negeri dan Swasta di Pulau Jawa. Keputusan untuk melakukan magang ini dikaji dengan pendekatan teori pilihan rasional oleh James Coleman dan Sonja Haug dalam keputusan bermigrasi melalui program magang tersebut. Temuan penelitian antara lain: melalui program TITP informan ingin mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa Jepang sebagai added value sehingga pengalaman selama magang menjadi sebuah pilihan yang menguntungkan ketika kembali ke Indonesia. Beberapa informan cenderung mencari pekerjaan dengan mudah karena dianggap sebagai pekerja berpengalaman.

The shortage of Japans productive workforce due to low birth rates, initiating the Japanese government opens opportunities for foreign workers through the TITP (Technical Internship Training Program) scheme. This opportunity was used by Japanese Literature Graduates to enter the Japanese labor market, even in the low-skilled sector.

This study aims to investigate the factors considered in the decision of educated workers to undertake an internship program to Japan through the TITP scheme, as well as how the benefits are obtained after undertaking the internship program.

This study is a qualitative-phenomenological method with in-depth interviews with 5 ex-trainees who have a Bachelors degree from State and Private University in Java. The decision to do this internship was approacehd by rational choice theory from James Coleman and Sonja Haug in the decision to migrate through the internship program.

The Research findings include: through the TITP program the informant wants to develop Japanese language skills. The experience during internship becomes a profitable choice when returning to Indonesia as added value to enter Indonesias Labor Market. The experience of working in Japan is a value. Some informants tend to find jobs easily because they are considered as experienced worker."

"Penelitian ini akan membahas tentang mengapa mahasiswa asing yang belajar di Jepang memutuskan untuk belajar di Universitas Kyushu, Jepang. Dengan melalui internasionalisasi pendidikan tinggi, Universitas Kyushu telah menarik para mahasiswa asing untuk belajar di sana. Adapun para mahasiswa asing memiliki alasan-alasan tertentu tentang mengapa mereka memutuskan untuk belajar di universitas tersebut. Dengan menggunakan penelitian metode kualitatif, penelitian ini dilakukan dengan cara wawancara dan kajian literatur untuk menganalisis keputusan para mahasiswa asing untuk belajar di sana dari sudut pandang embeddedness dan pilihan rasional (rational choice). Beberapa faktor seperti ketersediaan beasiswa, relasi dengan guarantor, biaya hidup yang murah, program studi yang berkualitas tinggi, lingkungan alam yang asri, dan kelengkapan fasilitas publik adalah beberapa alasan yang menarik para mahasiswa asing untuk belajar di sana. Mereka juga menerima saran dan bantuan dari hubungan pertemanan mereka yang mempengaruhi keputusan mereka untuk belajar di universitas tersebut.......This research will discuss why some foreign students studying in Japan decide to undergo their studies at Kyushu University. Thanks to the university's internationalization of higher education, Kyushu University has successfully attracted thousands of foreign students to study at the university. In this regard, foreign students have personal reasons for why deciding to study at the university. Using qualitative research methods, this research was conducted by way of interviews and a literature review to analyze the decisions of foreign students to study there from the perspective of embeddedness and rational choice. Factors such as the availability of scholarships, low cost of living, high-quality study programs, a well-preserved natural environment, and well-equipped public facilities are some of the reasons that attract foreign students to study there. They also receive recommendations and assistance from their colleagues (friends, academic supervisors, etc.) which influence their decision to study at the university."

"ABSTRACTIntroduksi teknologi dari pihak luar merupakan hal yang tidak bisa petani hindarkan selama melakukan praktik pertanian. Petani di Desa Cibodas, Lembang, Jawa Barat merupakan satu dari banyak kelompok masyarakat tani yang mengalami introduksi teknologi. Tulisan ini ingin menjelaskan bagaimana respon petani terhadap introduksi teknologi greenhouse dan smart farming system. Hasil dari penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa respon yang dimunculkan petani ternyata memiliki dua ragam, yaitu keputusan untuk mengadopsi atau tidak mengadopsi teknologi didasari oleh pilihan rasional masing-masing petani. Setiap respon petani ternyata menghasilkan konsekuensi yang berbeda. Lebih lanjut untuk memahami hubungan antara petani dengan teknologi, saya memakai konsep sociotechnical system. Lewat pandangan ini memungkinkan kita untuk berfokus mencermati hubungan antara manusia dengan teknologi yang sebenarnya saling terkait dan memengaruhi satu sama lain. Dalam hal merespon introduksi teknologi, terdapat seorang petani yang menarik perhatian saya Untuk memahami intensi dari respon petani tersebut, saya menggunakan konsep agency, lebih khususnya konsep neoliberal agency. Dalam konteks petani anggota Koperasi Gerbang Emas di Desa Cibodas agency ini terlihat dari intensi petani. Intensi tersebut adalah untuk selalu mengusahakan diri agar sesuai dengan permintaan pasar baik lewat personal branding atau lewat penerapan teknologi baru dalam praktik bertaninya, dan menganggap dirinya sebagai sebuah bisnis.

ABSTRACTIntroduction of technology from outsider is an event that farmers cannot avoid throughout agricultural practices. The farmers in Cibodas Village, Lembang, West Java are one of many farming communities who have experienced the introduction of technology. This paper intends to explain how the farmers responded to the introduction of greenhouse technology and smart farming system. Responses raised by the farmers turned out to have types, that is, decision to adopt or not to adopt the technology based on the rational choices of each farmer. In fact each farmer 39s response produces different consequences. Further to understand the relationship between farmers and technology, I use the sociotechnical system concept. In this view, it allows us to focus on observing the relationship between human and technology that are actually interconnected and affected each other. In looking at a response to the introduction of technology, there was a farmer who caught my attention. To understand the intention of this farmer 39s response I use agency concept, more particularly neoliberal agency concept. In the context of the farmers members of Koperasi Gerbang Emas in Cibodas Village, this agency form is seen from the farmers intention. The intention is to keep making self efforts to meet market demand either through personal branding or application of new technology in their farming practices. "

"Gelombang demokratisasi semakin meningkat di abad 20-an. Gelombang tersebut menyentuh Cina sebagai salah satu negara komunis di dunia. Praktik pemilu komite desa menjadi justifikasi pemerintahan Partai Komunis Cina (PKC) bahwa Cina turut serta mempraktikkan deliberasi sebagai proses konsultasi publik. Deliberasi menjadi salah satu aspek penting dalam praktik demokrasi. Salah satu kasus di suatu desa kecil bernama Wukan  menjadi sorotan dunia internasional di akhir tahun 2011. Dunia internasional menyoroti Wukan sebagai salah satu model demokrasi bagi negara Cina. Sorotan media fokus pada protes yang berhasil melahirkan pemilihan komite desa secara langsung lengkap dengan surat dan kotak suara di tahun 2012. Penelitian ini akan mempelajari faktor signifikan keberhasilan pelaksanaan pemilu komite desa Wukan secara langsung dan memahami apakah pemilu tersebut dapat diasumsikan sebagai salah satu bentuk demokratisasi Cina ke arah demokrasi liberal.  Metode kualitatif dengan instrumen studi literatur digunakan penulis sebagai metode penelitian. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah tekanan otoritas pejabat politik di atas pejabat desa menjadi faktor signifikan perubahan kebijakan. Selanjutnya, fenomena di Wukan tidak dapat dijustifikasi sebagai model demokratisasi di Cina karena fenomena Wukan merupakan suatu pengecualian. Kasus di Wukan justru menguatkan asumsi bahwa deliberasi di bawah pemerintahan PKC menjadi alat penguatan autokrasi ke pemerintahan lokal.

The wave of democratization has increased in the 20s. It has also reached China as one of communist country in the world. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) use the practice of village committee election as a justification that China also participate in practicing deliberation as public consultation process. Deliberation is one of the important aspects in the practice of democracy. A case in a small village named Wukan became the international spotlight in the late of 2011. International media highlighted Wukan as one of the models of democracy in China. They highlighted the protest that succeeded in creating direct village committee election, fully equipped with its ballot. This research studies significant factor of the success of direct election in 2012 and understanding whether the election can be assumed as one of democratization in China toward liberal democracy. Qualitative method with literature review as an instrument used in this research.  The results of this research are the pressure of the higher official over local official as a determinant factor for changes in electoral policy. Furthermore, the phenomenon in Wukan cannot be justified as a model of democracy in China because Wukans case is an exception. The case in Wukan actually strengthen the assumption that deliberation under the Chinese Communist Partys government became control instrument in local government."
