"Most societies in today’sworld are multilingual. ‘Language contact’ occurs when speakers of different languages interact and their languages influence each other. This book is an introduction to the subject, covering individual and societal multilingualism, the acquisition of two or more languages from birth, second-language acquisition in adulthood, language change, linguistic typology, language processing, and the structure of the language faculty. It explains the effects of multilingualism on society and language policy, as well as the consequences that long-term bilingualism within communities can have for the structure of languages. Drawing on the author’s own first-hand observations of child and adult bilingualism, the book provides a clear analysis of such phenomena as language convergence, grammatical borrowing, and mixed languages."

"This book depicts the phenomenon of cross-linguistic influences in the specific context of multilingual language acquisition. It consists of articles on various issues relating to the syntactic and lexical development of foreign language learners from different L1 backgrounds, in many cases involving languages which are typologically distant from English, such as Russian, Croatian, Greek and Portuguese. Individual chapters highlight different areas expected to be especially transfer-prone at the level of grammatical and lexical transfer in particular contexts of language contact."

"Written for students encountering the topic for the first time, this is a clear and practical introduction to second language acquisition (SLA). Using non-technical language it explains how a second language is acquired; what the learner of a second language needs to know; and why some learners are more successful than others. This new edition of Muriel Saville-Troike's bestselling textbook introduces in a step-by-step fashion a range of fundamental concepts, such as SLA in adults and children, in formal and informal learning contexts, and in diverse sociocultural settings. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it encourages students to consider SLA from linguistic, psychological, and social perspectives. Providing a solid foundation in SLA, this book has become the leading introduction to the field for students of linguistics, psychology, education, and trainee language teachers"-- Provided by publisher.

ABSTRACT
As English has been known as a global lingua franca, cultural awareness in English Language Teaching ELT practice in Indonesia becomes a serious issue. Many ELT practitioners urge the implementation of cultural learning in ELT to improve students rsquo; communicative competence. However, in the era of globalization, ELT is often linked to westernization to non-English speaking countries. Thus, a case study of cultural content analysis towards an EFL textbook used by a public university in Indonesia was conducted. This study aims to examine how cultural content in the EFL textbook is formulated and how the authors organized the depth of its cultural content. The cultural content is classified into Moran rsquo;s cultural dimension and knowing framework. Kachru rsquo;s World Englishes is also used to see cultural content distribution from inner, outer, and expanding countries. The twelve chapters discussed proves cultural imbalance towards native English speaking countries represented in the textbook since more than 50 of cultural dimension focusing on inner circle countries rather than outer or expanding circle countries. The data analyzed also shows that the textbook incorporates foreign cultural information to increase students rsquo; culture awareness, but still lacks of self-awareness since Indonesian culture is absent.
