Abstrak :
The optimum level of violent or aggressive play in sporting contests is an empirical issue and this book contains chapters on violence and aggression in sports, concentrating on the reasons for the existence and persistence of such behavior. Following a chapter devoted to the history of violence and aggression in sports, subsequent chapters are designed to cover the breadth of international professional sports including American football, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, baseball, auto racing, and fighting sports. Each chapter will contain econometric analysis of violence and aggressive play in a given sport. The individual chapters will examine whether or not a given sports league or governing body should intervene to reduce violence, and where intervention is warranted, extent of appropriate interventions is evaluated.

Abstrak :
Penelitian ini membahas tentang kekerasan antar suporter sepak bola yang menjadi bentuk fanatisme suporter di Indonesia. Beberapa studi berpendapat faktor munculnya kekerasan berbasis fanatisme suporter sepak bola adalah hasil tradisi turun temurun yang menjadi sebuah budaya dan adanya keinginan untuk menunjukan rasa maskulinitas mereka kepada suporter lawan. Pada dasarnya penulis setuju dengan penelitian tersebut, tetapi studi sebelumnya cenderung kurang membahas faktor lokalitas sebagai pemicu adanya kekerasan sepak bola. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan konsep lokalitas Lewis Mumford yang menggambarkan lokalitas sebagai sebuah tempat yang membuat orang merasa seperti dirumah dalam lingkungannya. Konsep ini digunakan untuk melihat bagaimana lokalitas bekerja didalam suporter sepak bola. Hasil temuan menyatakan bahwa faktor lokalitas memiliki pengaruh yang berbeda-beda terhadap kelompok suporter sepak bola dalam melakukan tindakan kekerasan. Lokalitas yang berpengaruh bagi suporter Viking berbeda dengan lokalitas yang berpengaruh bagi suporter Jakmania. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari studi pustaka, studi dokumen, wawancara mendalam dan observasi pada Jakmania sebagai suporter Persija Jakarta dan Viking sebagai suporter Persib Bandung. ......This study discusses violence between football fans which is a form of the fanaticism of supporters in Indonesia. Several studies argue that the emergence of violence based on fanaticism of football fans is the result of a hereditary tradition that has become a culture and a desire to show their sense of masculinity to opposing supporters. The author agrees with the research, but previous studies tend not to discuss locality factors as a trigger for soccer violence. In this study, the researcher uses Lewis Mumford's concept of locality which describes locality as a place that makes people feel at home in their environment. This concept is used to see how locality works within football fans. The findings state that locality has varying degrees of influence on supporters group of specific football teams in commiting acts of violence. The locality that affects Viking supporters is different from the locality that affects Jakmania supporters.. The data in this study were obtained from literature studies, document studies, in-depth interviews and observations on Jakmania as Persija Jakarta supporters and Viking as Persib Bandung supporters.
