Background: Complications that may arise from an ileostomy include infection, bleeding, skin irritation, obstruction, para-ileostomy hernia, and ileostomy prolapse. The occurrence of ileostomy complications is influenced by several factors. Some studies have shown that factors such as advanced age, diabetes mellitus, and improper ileostomy placement can increase the risk of complications. This study aims to identify the factors that influence the occurrence of stoma complications in patients with a stoma.
Methods: The design of this study is a cross-sectional study. The research subjects were patients who underwent ileostomy at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (CMH) from 2020 to 2023. The inclusion criteria included all adult patients (>18 years old). Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted, with results considered significant if p <0.05.
Results: A total of 142 subjects underwent ileostomy surgery. The majority of subjects were male (60.5%), under 65 years old (82.9%), and had a BMI of <25 kg/m² (82.9%). In the bivariate analysis, no significant association was found between age ≥65 years, BMI ≥25 kg/m², or type of surgery and the occurrence of ileostomy complications (p >0.05). However, in the multivariate analysis, a significant association was found between smoking history and ileostomy complications, with an odds ratio of 0.23; 95% CI: 0.08–0.70; p=0.01.
Conclusion: Smoking history has a significant association with the occurrence of ileostomy complications. Other factors such as gender, age, BMI, and type of surgery do not show a significant relationship with ileostomy complications.
