"Ottoman naval technology underwent a transformation under the rule of Sultan Selim III. New types of sailing warships such as two- and three-decked galleons, frigates and corvettes began to dominate the Ottoman fleet, rendering the galley-type oared ships obsolete. This period saw technological innovations such as the adoption of the systematic copper sheathing of the hulls and bottoms of Ottoman warships from 1792-93 onwards and the construction of the first dry dock in the Golden Horn. The changing face of the Ottoman Navy was facilitated by the influence of the British, Swedish and French in modernising both the shipbuilding sector and the conduct of naval warfare. Through such measures as training Ottoman shipbuilders, heavy reliance on help from foreign powers gave way to a new trajectory of modernization. Using this evidence, Zorlu argues that although the Ottoman Empire was a major and modern independent power in this period, some technological dependence on Europe remained."

"ABSTRAKArtikel ini membahas kritik sosial dalam drama La M re Coupable karya Beaumarchais. Drama ini merupakan seri terakhir dari trilogi Figaro. Kedua seri sebelumnya selalu menimbulkan permasalahan seperti pelarangan pentas La M re Coupable ditulis pada tahun 1792. Karya-karya Beaumarchais selalu mendapatkan kritikan dari para bangsawan tetapi menarik simpati rakyat kecil. Beaumarchais menggunakan tokoh utama pada tiap karya untuk menyampaikan kritik tajamnya. Kritik sosial dalam drama ini akan dipaparkan dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan struktural dan sosiologis. Hasilnya secara keseluruhan kritik sosial muncul di setiap lapisan pemaknaan dan erat kaitannya dengan konteks sejarah saat drama tersebut muncul pertama kalinya.

ABSTRACTThis article discusses social criticism in La M re Coupable drama by Beaumarchais. This drama is the last series of the Figaro trilogy. The two previous series always cause problems such as the ban stage. La M re Coupable was written in 1792. The works of Beaumarchais always get criticism from the nobles but attract the sympathy of the little people. Beaumarchais used the main character of each work to express his sharp criticism. Social criticism in this drama will be presented and analyzed using a structural and sociological approach. The overall result of social criticism appears in every meaningful layer and is closely related to the historical context when the drama first appeared."
