"Air Traffic Control (ATC) tasks require a high mental workload with complex cognitive activities. Since the tasks are likely to be fatigue-inducing and may cause aircraft accidents, ergonomics interventions are needed. This study investigated the effectiveness of peppermint odor on improved performance and fatigue while conducting simulated ATC tasks. A total of 16 participants performed ATC tasks using SkyHigh simulation software for two hours in two conditions (with and without peppermint odor). While the simulator was able to record participants’ performance during ATC tasks, participants’ fatigue development was monitored using an electroencephalograph (EEG), a heart rate monitor (HRM), and psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) apparatus. The results of this study show that the use of peppermint odor significantly (p < 0.05) improved simulation performance, based on all simulation indicators. The peppermint odor also significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited fatigue development, based on an EEG measure (decline in parietal ?), two HRM measures (decline in low frequency power (LF) and increase in high frequency power (HF)), and a PVT measure (10% of the longest time reaction)."

"ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT
The increase of air traffic density, which is predicted will happen in near future, could increase the mental workload of Air Traffic Controller ATCO . Some studies have shown that high mental workload can influence the onset of occupational stress on workers. Thus, it is necessary to perform a similar research for the occupational stress prevention among ATCO in Jakarta Air Traffic Service Center JATSC in anticipation of air traffic uplift. This study uses cross sectional method, along with the usage of NASA Task Load Index NASA TLX and International Stress Management Association ISMA instruments to measure subjective mental workload and occupational health of 47 respondents. There are also two other variables, education and period of employment, to be included in this study. Result shows that high mental workload has a significant and positive correlation with occupational stress, while the other variables don rsquo t show any significant correlation with occupational stress. Moreover, it also shows women are more susceptible to occupational stress than men which corresponds with other similar studies. It is concluded that mental workload has a significant correlation with occupational stress. Prevention can be achieved by implementing automated systems with cognitive ergonomical designs"

"This book discusses the latest advances in research and development, design, operation and analysis of transportation systems and their complementary infrastructures. It reports on both theories and case studies on road and rail, aviation and maritime transportation. Further, it covers a wealth of topics, from accident analysis, vehicle intelligent control, and human-error and safety issues to next-generation transportation systems, model-based design methods, simulation and training techniques, and many more. A special emphasis is placed on smart technologies and automation in transport, and on the user-centered, ergonomic and sustainable design of transport systems. The book, which is based on the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Human Factors in Transportation, held in Orlando, Florida, USA on July 21–25, 2018, mainly addresses the needs of transportation system designers, industrial designers, human–computer interaction researchers, civil and control engineers, as well as vehicle system engineers. Moreover, it represents a timely source of information for transportation policy-makers and social scientists whose work involves traffic safety, management, and sustainability issues in transport."
