"The strategic significance of the Dariali Gorge, the main pass across the central Caucasus, has long been recognised. It forms a border today as it has done for much of the past 2000 years. But how was an effective military force sustained in an isolated Alpine environment? Excavations, osteoarchaeology and landscape survey have revealed that the Early Middle Ages saw as much investment in controlling this key route as there was in Antiquity. Guarded by the same Muslim-led garrison for at least a quarter of a millennium, its survival in a harsh environment was made possible through military effort and long-distance food supplies."

"Penelitian ini bermula karena adanya permasalahan kesetaraan perempuan di Kaukasus Utara. Kaukasus Utara merupakan salah satu dari distrik federal yang ada di Rusia. Masyarakat Kaukasus Utara menerapkan hukum berdasarkan tradisi, adat, dan interpretasi agama yang patriarkis. Akibatnya, perempuan yang tinggal di daerah rural di Rusia seperti di Kaukasus Utara rentan mengalami kekerasan berbasis gender. Film Разжимая Кулаки/Razzhimaya Kulaki (Unclenching the Fists) tahun 2021 karya Kira Kovalenko mengangkat masalah yang dihadapi perempuan di Kaukasus Utara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana film Razzhimaya Kulaki merepresentasikan tradisi patriarki yang terjadi pada masyarakat Kaukasus Utara. Metode penelitian yang digunakan untuk menganalisis film ini adalah penelitian kualitatif Creswell dan mise-en-scène pada sinematografi. Film ini berhasil menunjukkan tradisi patriarki di Kaukasus Utara terutama pada lingkungan domestik yang mengakibatkan adanya ketidaksetaraan gender yang merugikan perempuan.

This research triggered because there are women equality problems in the North Caucasus. North Caucasus is one of the federal districts in Russia. The laws in the North Caucasus society are based on traditions, customs, and religious interpretations that are patriarchal in nature. Therefore, women living in rural areas in Russia, such as the North Caucasus, are vulnerable to gender-based violence. The Film Разжимая Кулаки/Razzhimaya Kulaki (Unclenching the Fists), released in 2021 from the director Kira Kovalenko, addresses the women’s problems in the North Caucasus. This study aims to discover and explain how the film Razzhimaya Kulaki represents the patriarchal tradition that occurs in North Caucasus society. The research methods used to analyze this film are Creswell's qualitative research and mise-en-scène in cinematography. The film successfully shown that there are patriarchal traditions in the North Caucasus especially within the domestic scope that harms the lives of women living in the North Caucasus."
