"The shipbuilding industry is currently operating in a state of intense market competition. In order to compete in the global market, shipbuilders must produce ships that are more efficient and which can be constructed in a relatively short turnaround time between order placement and delivery. This necessitates the development of new methods such as the building of series of ships, design optimization, and the modularization concept. This paper presents a design optimization approach based on the modularization concept for engine room design. The proposed method focuses on the following characteristics: piping systems, employed in multiple bulk carrier-series ships, of different sizes. Consideration is given to the cost and weight of these systems and the similarity and common features of the modules and arrangements concerned. The piping system design process is divided into two stages—module definition and arrangement design. A design structure matrix is adopted to define an effective module that could be employed for use in the design of various series of ships. An optimization system has been developed for use in the arrangement design stage. It uses a genetic algorithm to obtain a similar pattern for module arrangement in various series of ships, with specific consideration extended to cost and similarity. The details of the proposed method are discussed in this paper. In addition, the paper discusses the piping system design of an actual ship by using the proposed method and evaluates its effectiveness."

......Power transformer is one of the most important part in electrical power system and has losses as a part of cost electricity. Purchasing of transformer that only considers the initial become uneconomical for its entire life cycle. In transformer purchasing process, total cost of ownership is very important to be calculated and analyzed and basis for specification development and its design to get the optimum cost. In transformer purchasing and design process, the optimum parameter is not only determined by the design and the lowest cost, but also influenced by material cost, losses and its operation. Design optimization and calculation transformer total cost of ownership is very important to get reliable and economical product.
The purpose is to study and analysis design optimization and of power transformer 60 MVA 150 20kV dan 90 MVA 132 33 kV as a basis of specification development and design that used in purchasing process. The study is done by reviewing current design, fabrication and power transformer cost structure, design optimization and total cost ownership calculation.
The results of study show optimization using losses capitalization as input give the most optimum results, which reduce total ownership cost 3 for 60 MVA transformer and 9 for 90 MVA. The factors of losses capitalization and total cost of ownership is affected by interest rate, economic life, cost of electricity, load factor and transformer losses. Those factors are very important as a basis to determine the optimum specification, design evaluation and operation. The practical implication of this study is the owner and manufacturer of transformer can develop the right specifications and design to support purchasing process of transformer according to its operation."

"This book introduces a holistic approach to ship design and its optimisation for life-cycle operation. It deals with the scientific background of the adopted approach and the associated synthesis model, which follows modern computer aided engineering (CAE) procedures. It integrates techno-economic databases, calculation and multi-objective optimisation modules and s/w tools with a well-established Computer-Aided Design (CAD) platform, along with a Virtual Vessel Framework (VVF), which will allow virtual testing before the building phase of a new vessel. The resulting graphic user interface (GUI) and information exchange systems enable the exploration of the huge design space to a much larger extent and in less time than is currently possible, thus leading to new insights and promising new design alternatives. The book not only covers the various stages of the design of the main ship system, but also addresses relevant major onboard systems/components in terms of life-cycle performance to offer readers a better understanding of suitable outfitting details, which is a key aspect when it comes the outfitting-intensive products of international shipyards. The book disseminates results of the EU funded Horizon 2020 project HOLISHIP (www.holiship.eu).;"
