ABSTRACTThis educational practice report outlines the rationale for creating an original English oral communication skills course that combines the study of literature with formal debate. It includes a detailed breakdown of the regular class procedures used to prepare students for a weekly practice debate and also an overview of the course structure, showing how students acquire the skills and confidence to debate persuasively in front of an audience of their peers by the end of the course. The paper concludes with an overview of the English language skills as well as other academic competencies such as critical thinking and argumentative skills that the course aims to develop in students."

"This study is an attempt to address the issue of how Extensive Reading (ER) as a supplementary reading approach is able to encourage students critical literacy. Further how ER influences students perception of critical literacy related to students viewpoint of the texts is examined throughly. ER in this study was employed as a supplementary reading activity where students ere engaged to read in a large number of materials on a wide range of topics and they had freedom to select the reading material based on its relevance to their interests, knowledge, and experience (Day & Bamford, 2002). Relating the characteristics of ER, it seemed to us that students understanding of the text through ER activity should be scrutinized as one important aspect in English language teaching (ELT). in order to get more comprehensive picture, questionnaires were distributed to 38 students in the class. Yet, only 3 (three) students were willing to return the questionnaire and to be interviewed based on their answers in the quasionnaire. The findings revealed that ER is evidenced to motivate students to approach texts critically, challenge taken knowledge, relate the text to world's issues, improve their awareness of how to see and understand human beings, and question the intention of the texts from distinct viewpoints."

Students’ motivation, which is an essential aspect in an EFL (English as a foreign language) classroom, is affected by several factors. Employing a mixed method using Dörnyei, Csizér, and Németh’s attitudinal and motivational dimensions (2006) as its framework, this research attempts to discover how the implementation of online learning impacts the motivation of EFL students in a public university in Indonesia. To find out how the implementation of online learning impacts the use of online learning platforms and students’ motivation, data were collected using an online questionnaire and virtual interviews. Supporting the findings of previous literature comparing the students’ perception of in-class and online instruction in a blended learning setting (Wright, 2017), the results of this research demonstrate that online learning has influenced students’ attitude towards the English language and their linguistic confidence negatively. However, a lower level of self-consciousness during off-camera synchronous sessions was reported to contribute to the declining level of anxiety during online learning, which may contrast a finding of a previous study on students’ motivation and confidence during video conference classroom activities (Wu, et al., 2011)."

"The integration of technology into the EFL teaching and learning has become very important since technology can present real life English communication with its complexitites into the classroom. This integration has challenged EFL educators to be digitally literate in using technology to support English teaching and learning context. However, problems dealing with technology context in EFL classroom setting such as inaccessible high technology tool, unstable electricity source and unreliable data connection sometimes occur and therefore limit the teaching and learning experience. This paper aims to explore the way of coping with limited technology comtexts by carefully selecting and then integrating three most familiar technical tools to the EFL classroom activity namely Facebook, mobile phone, and computer, and by manipulating its features to construct the students' learning experiences in both actual and virtual learning environment. "This qualitative study investigates the use of Facebook as an electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) for assessing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking proficiency. It investigates whether Facebook as an e-portfolio helps students assess their speaking skills due limited time in the class. In particular, the focus is on the students' engagement in speaking tasks and their views on the e-portfolio-based evaluation. The study took place for three months in a private junior high school in Jakarta which consisted of 20 students. Classroom observations, questionnaires, and reflective journals were employed to collect the data. Using Kose's coding strategy (2006), the data was transcribed and coded. This unveiled the students' strategies for using Facebook to document speaking activities, with most relying on memorization (54%). The research also affirmed the effectiveness of Facebook as an e-portfolio instrument and found that Facebook is integrated well, giving positive results in operational descriptions, compatibility, and evaluative judgments. While some students perceived the benefits of adopting the e-portfolio via Facebook, the overall feedback tends to be favorable acceptance and appreciation of the tool. The feedback highlights the significance of teachers' digital proficiency in guiding students, given the lack of a comprehensive scoring system, so that emphasizing the necessity for a structured-speaking rubrics for consistent evaluations. This study highlights the use of Facebook as an e-portfolio tool by providing useful insights into students' strategies, motivation, and perceptions, suggesting implications for language learning through technology-mediated assessment.

The use of reading strategies, especially metacognitive reading strategies, is considered important to help reading comprehension for students who do not speak English or English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The purpose of this study was to see whether reading self-efficacy could mediate the relationship between reading motivation and metacognitive reading strategies. Participants in this study are 215 undergraduate students whose native language is not English and do not use English as their daily language. This is a quantitative research using Reading Self-Efficacy Questionnaire to measure reading self-efficacy, the Motivation Questionnaire to measure reading motivation, and the Metacognitive Reading Strategy Questionnaire to measure participants' metacognitive reading strategies. Hayes analysis shows that 38.2% of the variance of reading self-efficacy is influenced by reading motivation and 14.8% of the variance of metacognitive reading strategies is influenced by reading motivation. It was found that reading self-efficacy partially mediates the relationship between reading motivation and metacognitive reading strategies. Suggestions that can be given for further research is to expand the sample of students as participants and pay attention to other variables that may be covariates, such as gender."
