Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) is becoming increasing popular, practitioners use it in the railway, air traffic management and nuclear industries, amongst others. Originally developed to present safety assurance arguments, GSN need not be restricted to safety assurances only, in principle, you can use it to present (and test) any argument. Anyone wishing to support, or refute, a claim can use GSN. Written by an experienced practitioner, The Goal Structuring Notation is both for those who wish to prepare and present compelling arguments using the notation, and for those who wish to review such arguments critically and effectively. To emphasise the versatility of this approach The Goal Structuring Notation presents examples and questions based on diverse subject areas including Business Management, Drama, Engineering, Politics and Astrobiology. Simple examples introduce each symbol of the notation before introducing more complex structures which illustrate how the symbols work together in practical scenarios. To aid learning, questions and problems augment the text, so that the reader may reflect upon and try out the new concepts and principles presented.

Outsourcing in manufacturing : the knowledge dimension explains in detail how a manager can acquire, create, transfer and use knowledge that optimizes their outsourcing decisions and improves the changes of marketplace success. This book gives examples of the key decisions that needs to be taken by managers regarding effective outsourcing. Decisions are divided around the structural and infrastructural aspects of outsourcing and the key knowledge that needs to be managed to support good decisions. The book contains illustrations and examples of key processes throughout and concludes with a section dedicated to case studies. These case studies represent a variety of manufacturing system types and sizes focused on supply chain integration, and which deploy various manufacturing paradigms including craft, mass, lean, adaptive, and sustainable manufacturing. This book covers many theoretical and practical examples of critical outsourcing decisions, their knowledge aspects and how knowledge challenges can be dealt with in a systematic way. It provides a key resource for students, lecturers and industry managers looking to solidify their understanding and application of outsourcing decision making strategies.

......Nowadays, the growth of population and business activities in a city is creating a new problem, which is the movement of the people itself. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), which included in public transportation with a dedicated lane continues to prove that this kind of public transportation is effective and efficient to solve that problem by reducing congestion and creating a greener environment. However, MRT requires electrical power in a relatively big number. To meet this requirement and support a greener environment, a study is conducted. The method of this study is to simulate on how much potentially a solar power plant can be built on Jakarta MRT facility and conduct an analysis on engineering, economic, regulation, and strategic of the Company itself. The result is a 451.2 kWp Solar Power Plant could be built on the Workshop Building on Jakarta MRT, has NPV of Rp 648.247.150. The Cost of Capacity Charge could be avoided by giving the Power Utility Company of Indonesia a Business to Business (B2B) scheme.

The book presents several highly selected cases in emerging countries where the production-logistics systems have been optimized or improved with the support of mathematical models. The book contains a selection of papers from the 5th International Conference on Production Research (ICPR) Americas 2010 held on July 21-23 in Bogotá, Colombia. The main topic of the conference was “Technologies in logistics and manufacturing for small and medium enterprises” which is perfectly aligned with the realities of emerging countries. The book presents methodologies and case studies related to a wide variety of production/logistics systems such as diary production, auto parts, steel and iron production, and financial services.

Customer-driven supply chains : strategies for lean and agile supply chain design reviews the concept of lean thinking and its relationship to other key initiatives associated with supply chain management. Detailed industrial case studies based on the authors’ experience illustrate the principles behind lean supply chains. Moreover, a series of diagrams are used to illustrate critical concepts and supply chain architectures. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of transferring lean principles from the organisational level to the supply chain level. The theory and principles behind lean supply chains are reviewed. Other concepts related to lean supply chains discussed in the book include, mass customisation, agility, information sharing and the bullwhip effect. A methodology used to measure the performance of supply chains is introduced. This methodology comprises the tools of decision timeline, data-flow diagramming, supply chain value stream mapping and a performance measurement scorecard.
