"Penelitian ini mengkaji tema pada cerpen Korea yang berjudul Bincheo (My Poor Wife) karya Hyeon Jin Geon dengan menjelaskan gagasan-gagasan kecil pendukung tema yang terdapat dalam cerpen ini. Peneliti memilih Bincheo sebagai bahan penyusunan skripsi ini karena Bincheo merupakan salah satu karya sastra jenis cerpen modern pertama yang muncul pada tahun 1921 di Korea Selatan. Oleh karena itu, peneliti berpendapat bahwa Bincheo patut untuk diteliti lebih dalam. Pada masa penjajahan Jepang banyak penulis Korea Selatan pengusung aliran realisme yang membuat karya sastra yang berisikan tentang penderitaan dan kesedihan rakyat Korea. Bincheo merupakan salah satu dari karya sastra tersebut yang dapat dikatakan sebagai sastra realisme yang menonjol pada masanya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode close reading dengan seluruh analisis yang merujuk pada teks. Temuan dari penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa tema dalam cerita pendek ini adalah makna sebuah kebahagiaan. Melalui Bincheo, Hyeon Jin Geon ingin memberikan pembelajaran kepada para pembacanya bahwa kebahagiaan tidak selalu didapatkan dengan materi semata, melainkan juga dengan cinta.

This study examined the ideas of South Korea short stories titled Bincheo (My Poor Wife) by Hyeon Jin Geon along with explanations of small ideas that supporting the ideas which is contained in this short story. Researchers chose Bincheo as script materials because Bincheo is one of the literary works of the modern short story first appeared in 1921 in South Korea. Therefore, the researchers suggest that Bincheo deserves to be studied further in. During the Japanese occupation in South Korea, many of authors who used realism as foundation to make literary works which contains about Korean people_s suffering and sorrow. Bincheo is one of those works of literature that can be said as a prominent literary realism in that time. The methods used in this study is close reading method that analysis the entire text that contained in Bincheo. This study revealed that themes in this short story are the meaning of happiness. Through Bincheo, Hyeon Jin Geon wants to give its readers a learning that happiness is not always obtained with materials, but also with love."
