"[Over the last fi fty years, language policy has developed into a major discipline, drawing on research and practice in many nations and at many levels. This is the fi rst Handbook to deal with language policy as a whole
and is a complete ‘state-of-the-fi eld’ survey, covering language practices,
beliefs about language varieties, and methods and agencies for language
management. It provides a historical background which traces the development of classical language planning, describes activities associated
with indigenous and endangered languages, and contains chapters on
imperialism, colonialism, effects of migration and globalization, and
educational policy. It also evaluates language management agencies,
analyses language activism, and looks at language cultivation (including
reform of writing systems, orthography and modernized terminology). , Over the last fi fty years, language policy has developed into a major discipline, drawing on research and practice in many nations and at many levels. This is the fi rst Handbook to deal with language policy as a whole

"This paper examines with a particular affixe (keter-/-an) consisting in two primary
affixes. Through the analyse of terms coined by the Pusat Bahasa and spontaneous
terms, the paper distinguishes between ?double? and ?complex? affixation,
corresponding to different operating modes of affixation. The first deals with
an already affixed and lexicalized word, then reaffixed and relexicalized. The
second, almost only found in documents produced by the Pusat Bahasa, refers
to a base getting a first affix in a poorly (or not) lexicalized form, constituting
no more than a morphological stage towards the wished form, which is intent
as lexicalized. Complex affix keter-R-an is basically a morphological calque and
the author argues that it has been promoted and used during New Order on an
ideological basis, as a mean to modernize Indonesian terminology by keeping
its shape indigenous rather than by direct borrowing of English terms."

"In order to understand the way English is used and seen in Indonesia today, it is useful to know something about how historical, political, socio-cultural and linguistic factors have shaped its status and functions over the last century. The use of English in Indonesia has developed in the context of post-colonial educational competency building, and more recently the need to support development ? in particular its role in state education. However, attitudes of some policy makers and commentators towards the language have often been ambivalent, expressing fears of its power to exert negative cultural influences. The special status of English as a global language with many potential varieties that might pose as models for Indonesia also poses the question of which one would be right for the country. The paper looks at these educational and policy issues, and also gives some suggestions about the future. "

Steinhauer, Hein
"The number of different languages in Europe by far exceeds the number of countries. All European countries have national languages, and in nearly all of them there are minority languages as well, whereas all major languages have dialects. National borders rarely coincide with linguistic borders, but the latter (including dialect borders) mark by their nature also more or less distinct cultural areas. This paper presents a survey of the different language families represented in Europe: Indo-European, Uralic, Altaic, and the four Caucasian language families, each with their sub-branches and individual languages. Some information is given on characteristic structural phenomena and on the status and history of these languages or language families and on some of their extinct predecessors. The paper ends with a short discussion on the language policy and practices of the institutions of the European Union. Europe lacks a language with the status and power comparable to Indonesian in Indonesia. The policy is therefore based on equal status of all national languages and on respect for all languages, including national minority ones. The practice, however, is unavoidably practical: ?the more languages, the more English?."
