Modernization has effected a profound change in human civilizations and is a global trend since the 18th century. It includes not only the great change and transformation from traditional to modern politics, economies, societies and cultures, but also all human development and protection of the natural environment. Almost all nations in the world are undergoing some kind of modernization consciously or unconsciously, and the modernization drive can also be set as a national goal if they will. The first International Modernization Forum: Modernization and Global Change was held in Beijing in 2013. This volume, emanating from invaluable discussions at the forum, covers research on global modernization, multiple modernities, modernization theory, modernization science, modernization policy, and world modernization indexes. Global Modernization Review offers a collective understanding of the modernization phenomenon and provides invaluable guidance for further study, and significant international and interdisciplinary cooperation for researches on modernization.

his book explores the unintended and unanticipated effects associated with ̀modernization' projects and tackles the key question that they provoke---why do policy-makers persist in such enterprises in the face of evidence that they tend to fail?" "Paradoxes of Modernization first discusses what is meant by ̀modernization' and ̀unintended consequences', placing public policy reform within more general intellectual and social trends. It presents eight case study ̀modernization' projects. Their architects promised faster trains, a more efficient and reactive health service, a more motivated public service, better performing local government, enhanced information for prospective US university students, reduced rates of child mainutrition in developing countries, and a free, open, safe, interconnected cyberspace for people to conduct their social and political life. Each case provdes a neat story with a paradox that varies the modernization theme and tackles the question: why was the project pursued? The conclusion categorizes the cases in terms of their outcome, from success to disappointment, and suggests some strategies for a more balanced version of modernization for current and future policy-makers

Wahabi merupakan salah satu gerakan politik keagamaan Islam pada pertengahan abad 18 yang dalam perkembangannya berhasil mendirikan sebuah negara Kerajaan Arab Saudi. Sebagai aliran, Wahabi cenderung memiliki stereotip "puritan" dan "anti modernisasi". Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali informasi, memahami dan menjelaskan (explore and explain) proses pengalaman modernisasi politik di Arab Saudi yang didominasi oleh masyarakat yang menganut aliran Wahabi tersebut. Penelitian ini menganut paradigma klasik (classical paradigm) dengan menggunakan metode studi kasus (case study). Data sekunder dalam bentuk dokumen, naskah, dan pemyataan para elit dan masyarakat Arab Saudi selanjutnya dianalisa menurut interpretasi peneliti dalam suatu kerangka pemikiran (theoretical framework) tentang modernisasi dan gerakan politik keagamaan Wahabi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, bahwa modernisasi politik di Arab Saudi berlangsung secara evolusi dan relatif "statis" dikarenakan kontrol yang ketat terhadap proses pemilihan kebijakan dalam bentuk ikatan-ikatan tradisi (traditional boundaries), nilai-nilai (values) dan tujuan suci (spiritual ideology) Wahabi. Implikasi dari proses modernisasi yang demikian pada gilirannya akan melahirkan suatu bentuk masyarakat politik modern Arab Saudi yang relatif "unik" dengan ciri dan karakter yang berbeda dari masyarakat modern lainnya.

Wahhabi, one of the Islamic movements, was founded by Muhammad ibn Abdu lwahhab in the mid 18th century and reached the power when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia declared formally in 1932. As a mainstream of Islamic movement, Wahabbi tends to have a negative stereotype and most often identified as puritan and "anti-modernization". The purpose of this research is to understand, explore and explain the modernization process in Saudi Arabia dominated by Wahhabi society. The research used classical paradigm with qualitative method in case study form. The secondary data required, such as documents, texts, and statements of the highest ranks of the government and the society leaders of Saudi Arabia was analyzed within the framework of political modernization theories and religious political movement of Wahhabi. This research indicates that the political modernization process in Saudi Arabia goes on the atmosphere of ?evolution? and seems relatively "static" one. It is more caused by strong contrail in shaping policies of Wahhabi traditional boundaries, values, and spiritual ideologies. The above political modernization process will bring Saudi Arabia as a "unique" character of modern state in difference style compared to other modern states.
