"This article, based on original ethnographic research in two Indonesian non-government organizations, examines challenges faced by Indonesian activists in their work to improve inter-religious and inter-ethnic relations. The results of the research conclude that religio-political power struggles at the national level are the major obstacles for the NGO 's observed in their efforts to promote legal justice for religious and ethnic minorities. In particular, the use of religion as a political identity in Indonesia raises sensitive issues related to secularism and individual rights. The article recommends that Indonesian NGO's focus their efforts on three main areas in their work to promote religious and ethnic justice: 1) clarifying the origins of secularism, in particular the perception that human rights are not a part of Indonesian culture; 2) discussion of the history of colonialism and imperialism and the connection to human rights; and 3) expanding the discourse on religion and its relationship to racial and ethnic discrimination, Islamic law, and national law."

"Good public and corporate governance have begun to command considerable attention today in the world, as well as across the Asia-Pacific, not only from civil society, NGOs and the public itself, but also from the business community and the markets. Despite the heavy emphasis on international terror and the war against it, human rights and democracy are far from being irrelevant in good governance; in fact, the people could now become an even more effective "bridge" and "check" between good public and corporate governance than earlier envisaged. A new mentality seems to be sprouting up across Asia in terms of governance."

The thesis discusses the empowerment by BNN on NGO?s in the synchronization of prevention activities against drug abuse. The drug problem in Indonesia is not merely a responsibility of the government cq. BNN, but the community and NGO?s as well. The participation of the community and NGO?s is urgently needed to overcome the drug problem in Indonesia. This policy is laid out as one of the strategies in BNN?s revised National Strategy 2010 ? 2014. Through the synchronization of BNN and NGO?s activities it is expected to gain more effective and efficient results in the fight against drug abuse.
This is a qualitative study designed descriptively. The outcome of the study suggests that BNN formulates a policy or guidelines in regulating its relation with NGO?s by establishing cooperation, coordination as well as monitoring. The results of the study also shows the important role of BNN as a government institution in its function to coordinate efforts in dealing with drug abuse in Indonesia.
Besides enhancing / improving NGO?s participation in the prevention efforts against drug abuse, it is also necessary for BNN to make internal as well as external improvements. Internal factors include support and assistance from the central government and regional / provincial administration, advocacy and cooperation among the related agencies."
