Abstract: "What are personality disorders? How should they be conceptualized, and how should they be assessed and diagnosed in clinical practice? For over a century these questions have been at the heart of psychological science. Yet even today, as the recent controversy over proposed changes to the classification of personality disorders in DSM-5 attests, there is hardly consensus on the answers. This groundbreaking text offers a comprehensive and provocative tour of a field that is ripe for integration. Contributors who rank among the world's most prestigious clinical and personality psychologists guide readers through the state of our knowledge of personality disorders, from conceptual and theoretical concerns to the practical problems faced by assessing clinicians. They address the advantages and disadvantages of categorical and dimensional approaches to diagnosing personality pathology used in the standard diagnostic manuals, as well as the "hybrid" model described in Section III of DSM-5. Recent advances in statistical, methodological, and biogenetic research strategies are applied to the study of personality disorders, with a focus on clinical and empirical approaches to assessment and diagnosis. Theorists describe how psychodynamic, attachment, interpersonal, evolutionary, and cognitive processing approaches offer surprisingly similar models of conceptualizing and treating personality disorders"--Publicity materials. Summary: In the upcoming fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the major innovation for the personality disorders will likely be a shift from the classic syndrome-based approach to a dimensional description approach. This book explains how personality disorders can be understood from the perspective of the Five-Factor Model (FFM), the most heavily researched and empirically supported dimensional model of general personality structure. Since the second edition of this authoritative text was published in 2002, the research base supporting the FFM has more than quadrupled. As a result, the vast majority of this volume is new. The chapters summarize the conceptual and empirical support for the FFM, including the dimensional description of specific personality disorders and the application of the model for assessment and treatment. Case studies are also provided

A unique resource providing ready-made individual and group schema therapy sessions, linked across schema modes, allowing clinicians to pick and choose what they need or adopt a full integrated individual and group program which can be delivered over a range of treatment lengths from. The Schema Therapy Clinician's Guide is a complete clinical resource for psychotherapists looking to implement Schema Therapy, Group Schema Therapy, or a combination of both in a structured, cost-effective way. Written by world leaders in the field, including the creators of Group Schema Therapy, this book is based on the only model for integrated, time-limited Schema Therapy that has been proven in research studies. Accessible for Schema Therapy beginners, the book will also be invaluable for group or individual therapists interested in combining the two approaches, and for clinicians seeking ready-made resources for work on specific schema modes. -- The authors provide ready-to-use individual and group sessions with patient handouts, independently effective but also linked by schema mode that can be delivered across a range of treatment lengths. It divides the work of Schema Therapy into its basic components of cognitive, experiential, and behavioral pattern-breaking work, focusing on one of these components at a time in sessions. Readers can thus select the formats and modes that are most appropriate for the needs of their own patient group and then use those sessions as a basis for planning and delivering a treatment program. Ways to balance individual and group focus are discussed throughout. --Book Jacket.
