The book is peppered with previously unpublished comments from television executives, performers, producers, journalists, clergy, documentarians, and other industry operatives. During the late 1990s, I conducted taped conversations with scores of industry operatives to create a record of their impressions and intentions in the making of American television. Some are quoted directly in the book; many more of them influenced its writing.

Literasi Media adalah salah satu prasyarat untuk mengawasi televisi bagi khalayak yang aktif dan dapat diandalkan, sehingga televisi tidak semata-mata dikuasai oleh orientasi terhadap 'rating' yang pada akhirnya mengarah pada 'market driven orientation.' Literasi Media juga merupakan 'pintu masuk' bagi khalayak pemirsa televisi, penyelenggara pendidikan dan pengambil kebijakan publik untuk menjadi filter dari terpaan programa televisi dan menjembatani tidak memadainya perundangan dan peraturan penyiaran. Aspek penting dari literasi media adalah adanya 'critical viewing' atau kemampuan kritis untuk menilai tayangan. Ini penting dimiliki khalayak mengingat televisi sebagai media massa memiliki dua peran, yaitu sebagai tembaga penjunjung idealisme sekaligus institusi bisnis, yang membuat televisi merasa 'sah' jika mendahulukan kepentingan bisnis dan terasa 'mengabaikan' kepentingan khalayak. Demokrasi tak akan ada tanpa warga negara yang babas mendapatkan informasi. Kebebasan mengakses informasi memerlukan masyarakat yang mempunyai multi-literasi dan literasi media yang memadai dan paham akan hak, kewajiban dan kesempatannya dalam berperan serta. Studi ini menggali pemahaman khalayak pemirsa yang berdomisili di Jakarta Selatan tentang hak, kewajiban dan tanggung jawabnya dalam berperan serta untuk menyelenggarakan televisi nasional seperti tercantum dalam pasal 52 Undang - Undang No.32 tahun 2002 tentang Penyiaran, untuk mencapai penyiaran televisi nasional yang bermutu, beretika, berbudaya dan bertanggung jawab. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan tehnik pengumpulan data melalui focus group discussion, wawancara mendalam, observasi dan kajian pustaka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa informan kunci belum paham hak, kewajiban dan tanggung jawab mereka sebagai khalayak pemirsa yang dewasa dan bertanggung jawab, sebagai bagian dari masyarakat madani, dalam memengaruhi kualitas penyelenggaraan penyiaran televisi nasional di Indonesia. Literasi media khalayak pemirsa masih terbatas, bahkan pada kelompok dengan pendidikan lulus universitas dan berstatus kerja sebagai guru atau pendidik sekalipun. Tipisnya kepedulian khalayak pemirsa, sikap apatis terhadap pemerintah yang disertai persoalan yang lebih urgen seperti persoalan kemiskinan dan ekonomi , berpotensi menurunkan kesadaran dan pemahaman akan peran hak, kewajiban dan tanggung jawab khalayak pemirsa, yang pada akhirnya mengurangi kemampuan mereka melakukan kontrol. Hal ini mengancam mutu penyiaran yang berkualitas, beretika dan bertanggung jawab yang pada akhimya merugikan khalayak di bawah umur dan pihak yang berbagai...
