"Pengobatan alternatif telah menjadi populer di kalangan masyarakat modern di berbagai negara. Pengguna pengobatan alternatif juga telah meluas ke berbagai kalangan kelas sosial, usia, dan gender. Di Indonesia sendiri, pengobatan alternatif juga menjadi salah satu sistem pengobatan yang cukup populer pada masyarakat modern. Sosiologi kesehatan melihat hal ini sebagai fenomena sosial.Penelitian ini mencoba untuk mengkaji alasan masyarakat modern memilih pengobatan alternatif. Untuk memenuhi kebutuhan akan data, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan mewawancarai enam orang informan yang mengalami iatrogenesis klinis. Dengan menggunakan perspektif konflik, penelitian ini mengkaji bahwa masyarakat modern memilih pengobatan alternatif karena mengalami iatrogenesis klinis pada pengobatan modern. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa pemilihan pengobatan pada masyarakat modern tidak selalu mengikuti hierarchy of resort in curative practices atau urutan dalam pemilihan pengobatan.

Alternative medicine has become popular in modern society and various countries. The consumer of alternative medicine has also extended to various realm such as social class, age, and gender. In Indonesia, alternative medicine also become one of the medicine system medicine that quite popular in modern society. Sociology of health already seen this as social phenomenon.

This study tried to explain about the reason of modern society choose an alternative medicine. To fulfill the needs of data, this study uses qualitative method by interviewing six informants who experience in clinical iatrogenesis. By using the conflict perspective, the research observed that modern society choose the alternative medicine because they experienced clinical iatrogenesis in modern medicine. This study also found that the selection of medicine system in modern society is not always follow the hierarchy of resort in curative practices or sequence in the selection of medicine."
