Show me your teeth," the great naturalist Georges Cuvier is credited with saying, "and I will tell you who you are." In this shattering new work, veteran health journalist Mary Otto looks inside America's mouth, revealing unsettling truths about our unequal society. Teeth takes readers on a disturbing journey into America's silent epidemic of oral disease, exposing the hidden connections between tooth decay and stunted job prospects, low educational achievement, decreased social mobility, and the troubling state of our public health. Otto's subjects include the pioneering dentist who made Shirley Temple and Judy Garland's teeth sparkle on the silver screen and helped create the all-American image of "pearly whites"; Deamonte Driver, the young Maryland boy whose tragic death from an abscessed tooth sparked congressional hearings; and a marketing guru who offers advice to dentists on how to push new and expensive treatments and how to keep Medicaid patients at bay. In one of its most disturbing findings, Teeth reveal that toothaches are not an occasional inconvenience, but rather a chronic reality for millions of people, including disproportionate numbers of the elderly and people of color. Many people, Otto reveals, resort to prayer to counteract the uniquely devastating effects of dental pain. Otto also goes back in time to understand the roots of our predicament in the history of dentistry, showing how it became separated from mainstream medicine, despite a century of growing evidence that oral health and general bodily health are closely related. Muckraking and paradigm-shifting, Teeth exposes for the first time the extent and meaning of our oral health crisis. It joins the small shelf of books that change the way we view society and ourselves - and will spark an urgent conversation about why our teeth matter.

Maxillary central diastema in a child with deciduous or mixed dentition is common and normal, owing to the growth and development of the anterior segment of the upper jaw. However, if the central diastema persists after the permanent cuspids have erupted, the dentist should clarify its aetiology and establish a conforming treatment. This report discusses a case in a 13 years old girl, in the beginning of permanent teeth period, with a central diastema due to a high attachment of the maxillary labial frenum. Cross bite anterior and midline shifting were also found in this patient. The treatment was frenectomy followed by orthodontic treatment. The closure of the diastema took place after one month of treatment. The orthodontic treatment has been continued to archieve the correct occlusion.

......The aim of this study was to know the effect of turmeric tamarind solution on surface roughness of conventional glass ionomer cement. This study used 20 specimens were immersed in a turmeric tamarind solution of packaging and not the packaging (each n=10) for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. Results analyzed by Two-way ANOVA showed between turmeric tamarind solution of packaging and not the packaging had no significant difference (p>0,05), but a significant difference on immersion duration in two groups (p<0,05). The longer of immersion duration in a trumeric tamarind solution affect to increase surface roughness.

ABSTRACT
Geriatric Dentistry: Caring for Our Aging Population" provides general practitioners, dental students, and auxiliary members of the dental team with a comprehensive, practical guide to oral healthcare for the aging population. Beginning with fundamental chapters on the psychological, environmental, and social aspects of aging, the book approaches patient care from a holistic point of view. Subsequent chapters show the importance of this information in a practical context by discussing how it affects office environment, decision?-making and treatment planning, and the management and treatment of common geriatric oral conditions. Case studies and study questions are used to illustrate application of educational presentations to practice settings. Contributed by leaders in the field, "Geriatric Dentistry" will strengthen readers' understanding and clinical acumen in addressing this special population.

Abstrak :
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that is aetiologically and clinically heterogeneous. Behavior of the autistic child makes delivery of oral hygiene and dental treatment a problem because of its lack of communication and decreased intelligence. The status of dental health depends on the care of oral hygiene to the auxilary help of parents and educators. Poor food habits are common and diet is often antithetic to good oral health, persistent desire for soft food or sweets is often seen. The caries experience is a comparable with a lower hygiene level than those of the normal children. The dental health education of the autistic children is inherently unresponsive to demonstration, resists eye to eye contact and will frequently resist any effort to establish personal contacts with the dental personnel. Patient management will therefore be qualitatively different from person to person and shall be based on a unique management of the behavioral characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to help the dentist recognized the problems associated with dental treatment, the behaviour in a dental enviroment of the autistic child and their coordination ability required to be assessed, so that the right dental treatment could be adjusted.

Abstrak :
Indonesian Journal of Dentistry 2006; Edisi Khusus KPPIKG XIV: 272-278 Consumers oriented quality in dental health services has become more important in the era of free competition. Perceived quality by the community has been closely related with their previous experience level of satisfaction on the quality of the services they received. The information on the perceived quality of dental services in Indonesia has been scarce. One of the reasons is lack of stardardized method in measuring the consumer's perspective on dental quality. Using the Service Quality (Servqual) model cross - sectionally, this study is to investigate differences in patterns on perceived quality of different groups of Puskesmas (government owned) and Syahid clinic (private owner) consumers. The analysis of Servqual Kartesius diagram was carried out lo assess the quality of service, based on various criteria namely Dimensions of Physical Tangibles, Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, and Empathy. Results showed differences in quality perception likely due to differences in level of education and income. It was concluded that the Servqual model has been adequately practical for assessing quality dental services based on level of consumer's satisfaction and degree of importance as measured from the consumer's perspective. Eventually, the results of Servqual measurements can be used as guidance for quality improvements of dental services, based different characteristics of consumers.
