Abstrak :
Nowadays, the pursuance of sustainability obligates manufacturers to redesign products in order to reduce negative environmental impacts. However, only a few studies have simultaneously considered environmental sustainability and assemblability. To bridge this research gap, this study aimed to develop a redesign method based on modular product architecture. This method manages to support a sustainable product considering its materials, assembly sequence and line balance at initial design phase. This method begins with a current product analysis based on economic and environmental performances (i.e., total cost and CO2 emissions). Additionally, new materials and assembly methods are incorporated into redesigning a more sustainable product without compromising production performance. To ensure assemblability, the line balance of 60% is served as one of the constraints. This study applies the particle swarm optimization algorithm to calculate an optimal module organization along with assembly methods and assembly sequences. An air purifier case study is presented to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed method. As a result, the redesigned product can be more easily maintained during product usage and be recycled at the end of product life.

Naskah ini membahas mengenai pemanfaatan kembali unit shipping container bekas sebagai bangunan dengan pendekatan arsitektur adaptive reuse. Adaptive reuse merupakan strategi desain yang menekankan isu sustainability sebagai upaya untuk memperoleh arsitektur berbasis lingkungan. Adaptive reuse unit shipping container bekas sebagai bangunan bertujuan memanfaatkan sumber daya limbah, juga mengelola shipping container guna mencapai efektifitas bangunan melalui metode pasif desain. Penelusuran gagasan sustainability pada bangunan shipping container berdasarkan aspek sustainable architecture, yang mencakup: site, komunitas, kesehatan, material, energi, dan air. Secara spesifik, aspek sustainabilitas pada adaptive reuse unit shipping container bekas sebagai bangunan difokuskan menjadi tiga ide pokok: site, material dan energi. Ketiga ide ini menjadi aspek utama dalam kajian studi kasus bangunan shipping container, naskah ini juga akan membahas secara kualitatif mengenai metode desain pasif yang diterapkan guna menunjang performa shipping container sebagai bangunan.
This text discusses the reuse of shipping container as building in architectural approach through adaptive reuse. Adaptive reuse is a design strategy which emphasize sustainability issue as effort to acquire an architecture with environment awareness. Adaptive reuse of shipping container as a building have a purpose to reusing wasteful resources, and managing shipping container in order to achieve building effectiveness through passive design method. Investigation idea of sustainability at shipping container buildings by virtue of sustainable architecture aspects, including site, community, health, material, energy, and water. Specifically, sustainability aspects in adaptive reuse of shipping container as a building which has been focused on three main ideas site, material and energy. This main idea will be a fundamental aspect in the case study of shipping container buildings, this text will qualitatively disscuss by using passive design method which has been applied to support a building performance of reusing shipping container.

Abstrak Berbahasa Indonesia/Berbahasa Lain (Selain Bahasa Inggris): Pertumbuhan konsumsi air minum dalam kemasan terus meningkat, meskipun banyak sekali laporan negatif terkait dengan industri tersebut. Media saat ini sedang menyorot kasus krisis lingkungan, dan perusahaan air minum dalam kemasan dianggap sebagai salah satu yang bertanggung jawab. Penggunaan botol plastik menerima paling banyak kritik di industri air minum dalam kemasan, terutama karena desain produk mereka yang dianggap berbahaya. Kepedulian konsumen mendorong permintaan untuk desain produk yang lebih aman, namun perusahaan masih memprioritaskan profitabilitas dalam menangani masalah ini. Konsep sustainability di dalam makalah ini diadopsi untuk menandakanpentingnya perusahaan air minum dalam kemasan untuk berkomitmen bersama menyelesaikan masalah lingkungan. Berikut adalah pertanyaan utama didalam makalah ini: Bagaimana konsep sustainability dalam desain produk dapat membantu mempertahankan competitive advantage dalam industri air minum dalam kemasan? Diakui sebagai teori terkenal tentang competitive advantage, kedua teori stakeholder dan resource-based view akan digunakan sebagai landasan teori untuk makalah ini. Makalah ini mengusulkan empat desain produk sustainable sebagai penemuan akhir. Desain produk tersebut bertujuan untuk menggantikan atau mengurangi aspek negatif botol-botol plastik. Desain produk upcycling, desain produk yang tahan lama secara emosional, desain produk bioplastic dan desain produk tanpa kemasan akan dibahas di bagian analisis. Semua temuan dalam makalah ini diharapkan untuk mempengaruhi secara positifperceived value produk air minum dalam kemasan. Dua desain produk yang dianggap paling penting akan dimasukkan dalam bagian kesimpulan, yaitu desain produk yang tahan lama secara emosional dan desain produk tanpa kemasan. ...... Consumption growth of bottled water continues to increase, despite the myriad adverse reports associated with the industry. The current heightening media spotlight amplifies the environmental crisis, and bottled water companies are presumed accountable. Plastic bottles receive the most criticism in the bottled water industry, mainly accusing their harmful product design. Consumer concerns drive the demands for greener product design while companies still prioritize profitability in addressing the issue. The concept of sustainability is adopted to dismiss the diverging interests and signify the importance of bottled water companies’ commitment to solve the environmental issue. This paper proposes the following as the main research question: How does sustainability in product design help sustain competitive advantage in the bottled water industry? Recognized as a well renowned theory of competitive advantage, stakeholder and resource-based view theory will be used as a theoretical foundation for this paper. The findings of this paper bring four sustainable product designs that aims to replace the negatively scrutinized plastic bottles. Upcycling product design, emotionally durable product design, bioplastic product design and zero-packaging design will be discussed in the analysis section. All of the suggestions are expected to positively affect perceived value of the product. Two of the most notable suggestions will be included in the conclusion, which are emotionally durable product design and zero-packaging design.
