"Themes that are highlighted include :
- the role of language : the models developed for engineering design have resulted in new ways of talking about technological systems
- communities of practice : related to the previous point, particular engineering communities have particular ways of sharing and developing knowledge
- graphical (re)presentation : engineers have developed many ways of reducing quite complex mathematical models to more simple representations
- reification : highly abstract mathematical models are turned into ‘objects’ that can be manipulated almost like components of a physical system
- machines : not only the currently ubiquitous digital computer, but also older analogue devices, slide rules, physical models, wind tunnels and other small-scale simulators, as well as mechanical, electrical and electronic analogue computers
- mathematics and modelling as a bridging tool between disciplines

"The papers were elicited primarily from Mathematics for Industry: Challenges and Frontiers, a conference sponsored by SIAM in October, 2003. This conference was different from other SIAM conferences in that it was a forum for scientific experts from industry and government to meet with members of the mathematical community to discuss the visions they had for their industries and the obstacles they saw to reaching those goals.
A distinctive feature of this work is its organization. The three sections: Industrial Problems; Mathematical Responses to Industrial Problems; and The Process of Mathematical Modeling, Practice, and Education offer a process view, always initiated by a practical problem, leading to the need for responsive mathematics both at the research and educational levels. All topics are tightly integrated with contemporary computing technology. Mathematical topics include splines, modeling, computational fluid dynamics, statistical model verification, and mathematics for design and simulation.

"Parameter estimation is the process of using observations from a system to develop mathematical models that adequately represent the system dynamics. The assumed model consists of a finite set of parameters, the values of which are calculated using estimation techniques. Most of the techniques that exist are based on least-square minimization of error between the model response and actual system response. However, with the proliferation of high speed digital computers, elegant and innovative techniques like filter error method, H-infinity and Artificial Neural Networks are finding more and more use in parameter estimation problems.
Modelling and Systems Parameter Estimation for Dynamic Systems presents a detailed examination of the estimation techniques and modeling problems. The theory is furnished with several illustrations and computer programs to promote better understanding of system modeling and parameter estimation. The material is presented in a way that makes for easy reading and enables the user to implement and execute the programs himself to gain first hand experience of the estimation process."

"This book presents 11 tutorial lectures by leading researchers given at the 12th edition of the International School on Formal Methods for the Design of Computer, Communication and Software Systems, SFM 2012, held in Bertinoro, Italy, in June 2012. SFM 2012 was devoted to model-driven engineering and covered several topics including modeling languages, model transformations, functional and performance modeling and analysis, and model evolution management."

"This book covers and expands upon material presented by the author at a CBMS-NSF Regional Conference during a ten-lecture series on multiphase flows in porous media and their simulation. It begins with an overview of classical reservoir engineering and basic reservoir simulation methods and then progresses through a discussion of types of flowsingle-phase, two-phase, black oil (three-phase), single phase with multicomponents, compositional, and thermal.
The author provides a thorough glossary of petroleum engineering terms and their units, along with basic flow and transport equations and their unusual features, and corresponding rock and fluid properties. The practical aspects of reservoir simulation, such as data gathering and analysis, selection of a simulation model, history matching, and reservoir performance prediction, are summarized."
