Islamic Women's Organizations' Perception and Attitude towards Gender Issues (Case study of Nasyiatul Aisyah Yogjakarta and Fatayat NU Jakarta)This research is grounded on the assumption that Islamic women's organizations have not been actively involved in addressing women's issues as well as been cooped by the New Order Ruler. This research thus aims to reveal the perception and attitude of the organizations towards gender issues, namely dual roles, domestic violence, and women labors.
Using qualitative approach with feminist perspective, 24 subjects from PPNA Jogjakarta and Fatayat NU Jakarta are interviewed.
Findings show that the perception and attitude towards gender issues of the organizations have been mostly influenced by the concepts of gender shared by the members of the board. Good understanding of gender issues shared by the members will result in good work program in addressing women's issues. Nasyiah and Fatayat have good understanding of gender concept as reflected by their work program that focuses more on women's interests. Even though Fatayat and NU have different approach, both organizations to some extent have set up work program dealing with gender issues. While Nasyiah has been intensely working on women's entrepreneurship, Fatayat focuses more on women's reproductive rights.
Both organizations also focus more on programs dealing with strategic than practical needs. It concludes, however, both Fatayat and Nasyiah still need to reformulate their work programs especially those tackling issues such dual roles, domestic violence and women labors.

"This essay explores gender issues in the contemporary application of Islamic law in the Muslim majority-states of northern Nigeria. Brief political background helps to explain the shari‘a codes enacted by the legislatures of the states, drawing largely from the classical formulations of Maliki school of Islamic law. Women were among the first to be prosecuted and sentenced to death by stoning for the offence of zinā. To provide effective legal defense for the accused women, their lawyers and activists for women human rights had to argue in Islamic law before they could convince Shari‘a Courts of Appeal to overturn the sentences of death by stoning and set the women free. In the process, women activists learned a lot about the classical formulations of Maliki school of Islamic law, where they discovered the rich flexibility of Islamic thought, and that has empowered them to articulate Islamic criticisms against gender bias in the recently enacted shari‘a codes."

"This book presents new research on gender-based violence in Southeast Asia, bringing together varied scholarly work in law, policy, and practice. It enables a greater understanding of violence against women as an international concern, highlighting particular issues that arise in the region. Against a background of international obligations to ensure women's rights through laws and policies that are geared at ending violence against women and girls, this research documents the state failures, individual shame and fear, and societal culture that collectively affects the reporting, investigation, prosecution of perpetrators, and protection of victims. The research explores differing legal mechanisms both internationally, and within nation states, relating to cases of physical and sexual violence. It recognizes the need for functioning mechanisms to ensure women can report their cases safely and be provided with protective and therapeutic services in a way that is systematic, effective, and measurable. Laws and court decisions are analyzed, crisis and safety centers are examined, and in-depth interviews are conducted with actors and NGOs with relevant roles and functions in the mechanism of cases of violence against women. The result is a comprehensive assessment of the incalculable harm it does within Southeast Asian society, and the obstacles it presents for law enforcement. The chapters uncover mechanisms with unique characteristics across Southeast Asia, providing a nuanced understanding of the cultural and social backgrounds, as well as the religious structures, that can both help and hinder suitable frameworks. It is relevant to scholars, policymakers, and practitioners in law, criminology, and gender sociology.
“This is a valuable contribution towards empowering the women of South East Asia out of victimhood to valued equality, involvement in governance and leadership through the elimination of violence and discrimination and an excellent resource not just for those working in this field but for those involved in law making, the media and the people of South East Asia.”
