Setiap kota memiliki identitas yang membuat kota tersebut berbeda dengan kota lainnya begitu juga dengan kota Makassar. Tesis ini berfokus pada fenomenon yang terjadi di kota Makassar, tepatnya di kawasan bersejarah kota Makassar yaitu sekitar tengaran kota benteng Rotterdam dan lapangan karebosi. Saya melihat bahwa kawasan yang awalnya memiliki karakter dan identitas yang cukup kuat, kini mulai pudar. Keberagaman aktifitas membuat kawasan ini berkembang kurang terkendali dan kehilangan nilai ? nilai pembentuk identitas. Walau dikenal sebagai kawasan sarat cerita sejarah, namun hanya sebatas sebagai suatu artefak. Saya berpendapat ruang kota kawasan ini perlu ditata kembali untuk membangkitkan dan menonjolkan identitas kota Makassar, dengan cara mengembalikan sense of place kawasan. Caranya adalah melalui integrasi tempat bertinggal dan aktifitas keseharian dengan sejarah. Dengan demikian, identitas serta nilai dari kawasan menjadi lebih terlihat dan terasa. Salah satu cara untuk memunculkan identitas kawasan inti kota kota Makassar yang mulai pudar tersebut adalah dengan menilik secara mendalam rangkaian cerita, budaya ataupun jejak-jejak historis yang berada di tempat tersebut. Sehingga nilai sejarah yang sudah ada tidak terbatas hanya sebagai artefak mati, tapi sejarah yang hidup dalam keseharian masyarakat kota Makassar masa kini maupun masa datang. Saya mencoba menggali pentingnya identitas dalam sebuah kota, serta bagaimana sejarah berperan aktif dalam pembentukan identitas kota Makassar.

ABSTRACT
Every city has unique identity that differentiate one from another. This also applies to Makassar. This thesis focuses on a phenomenon that occurres in Makassar, especially in the historical district of Makassar, where fortified city of Rotterdam and Karebosi field are located. I thougt the area that originally had a strong character and identity, now began to fade. The diversity of activities makes this region expansion became less restrained. It also lose its values that form the identity of the city. Although known as a region full of historical stories, it is just merely an artefact. I think the region needs the city hall reorganized to raise and highlight the identity of Makassar to restore regional sense of place through the integration of living quarters and the daily activities in it with history. Thus, the identity and values of the region are becoming more visible and pronounced. One of the way to reveal the fading identity of the core area of Makassar is by looking in depth series of stories, cultural, or historical traces in the place. So, the value of the existing history is not only as a dead artifacts, but also as a living history in everyday society for the present and future of Makassar. I tried to explore the importance of identity in a city, and how history play an active role in the formation of the identity of Makassar
