Abstrak :
This introduction to human dignity explores the history of the notion from antiquity to the nineteenth century, and the way in which dignity is conceptualised in non-Western contexts. Building on this, it addresses a range of systematic conceptualisations, considers the theoretical and legal conditions for human dignity as a useful notion and analyses a number of philosophical and conceptual approaches to dignity. Finally, the book introduces current debates, paying particular attention to the legal implementation, human rights, justice and conflicts, medicine and bioethics, and provides an explicit systematic framework for discussing human dignity. Adopting a wide range of perspectives and taking into account numerous cultures and contexts, this handbook is a valuable resource for students, scholars and professionals working in philosophy, law, history and theology.

Human dignity is now a central feature of many modern constitutions and international documents. As a constitutional value, human dignity involves a person's free will, autonomy, and ability to write a life story within the framework of society. As a constitutional right, it gives full expression to the value of human dignity, subject to the specific demands of constitutional architecture. This analytical study of human dignity as both a constitutional value and a constitutional right adopts a legal-interpretive perspective. It explores the sources of human dignity as a legal concept, its role in constitutional documents, its content, and its scope. The analysis is augmented by examples from comparative legal experience, including chapters devoted to the role of human dignity in American, Canadian, German, South African, and Israeli constitutional law.

God creates mankind as a highest level creature. Although mankind have a noble dignity, their action sometimes do not reflect their nobleness. There are many crimes, violences and coercions done to their neighbours. Violation does not only humiliate human dignity but also an action against to humanity. Mahatma Gandhi, a famous and great humanity leader, gave a high appreciation to human dignity in almost of his own life pattern, works and teachings. He tried very hard to oppose violence by doing and promoting love and non violence action. Gandhi's works and teachings about humanity, love and non violence action can be a reflection and inspiration for us to develop a fully meaning of the second basic principle of Pancasila: Humanity that is just and civilized.

This study tries to explain some of the basic reasons behind the Porsean local community's strong demand to close PT Indorayon (now Toba Pulp Lestari- TPL) located in Porsea. The larger community are aware in the past Indorayon had afforded great financial gain to Indorayon's shareholders but the local community has had no such access to these financial gains despite the fact that mill is based on their own land. Wrong management has also contributed to the Indorayon's conflict and consequently, the local community has been greatly antagonised and the antipathy towards Indorayon has slowly but intensively grown. Another finding is the existence of numerous NGO's founded by the Tobanese society's intellectuals which have differing vested interests but all exploit the Indorayon problem as the sole reason for their existence. The research was conducted using the qualitative method. The data in the study was obtained by using participant observation and in depth consultation with certain interviews.
