"Most Javanese manuscript illustrations of narrative poems and (pseudo)-historical chronicles (babad) depict only one part of the natural world: animals. Animals are portrayed in relation to the characters in the text they illustrate. Some illustrated Javanese manuscripts are discussed below in relation to the way in which they illustrate the natural world: these are the fictive narrative poems Serat Selarasa, Serat Panji Jayakusuma, Serat Asmarasupi, Serat Jayalengkara Wulang, and Serat Damar Wulan, and the poetic (pseudo)-historical chronicle Babad Perang Demak. It appears from the illustrations in the manuscripts discussed that in the narrative poems the wayang style is preferred and they depict animals differently from the babad for which the wayang-style is not used and whose illustrations tend to be more “realistic”. The focus in the narrative poems discussed here is on serpents, crocodiles, and elephants, and in the babad on all the animals featured."

"ABSTRAKPenelitian ini membahas ilustrasi dalam Serat Murtasiyah PB A.214 koleksi Perpustakaan Museum Sonobudoyo Yogyakarta. Naskah ini adalah naskah berilustrasi yang mendapat pengaruh ajaran Islam. Upaya untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian ini dilakukan dengan pendekatan filologi dan kodikologi. Pendekatan filologi digunakan untuk menginventarisasi, mendeskripsi, dan mentransiliterasi teks. Pendekatan kodikologi digunakan untuk mengkaji ilustrasi. Untuk mengetahui makna ilustrasi maka teksnya dialih-aksarakan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ilustrasi yang terdapat dalam naskah Serat Murtasiyah PBA.214 memiliki kaitan yang erat dengan teks dalam naskah tersebut.

ABSTRACT

This research studied about the illustration in Serat Murtasiyah PB A.214 kept in the Museum Sonobudoyo Yogyakarta Library. These script is Javanese illustration script that got influence from Islam_s teaching. To get the final result from this research, researcher use philology and kodikology work. Researcher using philology work to inventory, description, and translation the texts. Researcher using kodikology work to Illustration study based. For meaning of the illustration, so researcher must translation the text first. The result of this study indicated that the illustrations contained in the manuscript Serat Murtasiyah PBA. 214 have a close relationship with the existing text in the manuscript."
