The book provides a sound mathematical base for life insurance mathematics and applies the underlying concepts to concrete examples. Moreover the models presented make it possible to model life insurance policies by means of Markov chains. Two chapters covering ALM and abstract valuation concepts on the background of Solvency II complete this volume. Numerous examples and a parallel treatment of discrete and continuous approaches help the reader to implement the theory directly in practice.

It is powerful computational ability and graphical functions make learning statistics much easier than in years past. Each chapter explains statistical formulas and directs the reader to use excel commands to solve specific, easy-to-understand business problems. In financial studies, assets are observed simultaneously and their joint development is analysed to better understand general risk and to track indices. In medicine recorded observations of subjects in different locations are the basis of reliable diagnoses and medication. In quantitative marketing consumer preferences are collected in order to construct models of consumer behavior. The underlying data structure of these and many other quantitative studies of applied sciences is multivariate. Focusing on applications this book presents the tools and concepts of multivariate data analysis in a way that is understandable for non-mathematicians and practitioners who need to analyze statistical data. The book surveys the basic principles of multivariate statistical data analysis and emphasizes both exploratory and inferential statistics. All chapters have exercises that highlight applications in different fields. The third edition of this book on Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis offers the following new features. Each chapter first explains briefly the formulas that are included in the chapter, and then directs the student on how to use excel commands and formulas to solve a specific business problem. Three practice problems are provided at the end of each chapter, along with their solutions in an Appendix. At the end of the excel guide, an additional practice exam allows the reader to test his or her understanding of each chapter by attempting to solve a specific educational or psychometrical issue or problem using Excel (the solution to this problem is also given in an appendix). From the beginning of the book, readers/students are taught how to write their own formulas and then how to utilize excel drop-down formula menus as well for such exercises involving one-way ANOVA, simple linear regression, and multiple correlation.​
