"The performance of a process for example, how an aircraft consumes fuel can be enhanced when the most effective controls and operating points for the process are determined. This holds true for many physical, economic, biomedical, manufacturing, and engineering processes whose behavior can often be influenced by altering certain parameters or controls to optimize some desired property or output."

"This textbook provides undergraduate students with an introduction to optimization and its uses for relevant and realistic problems. The only prerequisite for readers is a basic understanding of multivariable calculus because additional materials, such as explanations of matrix tools, are provided in a series of Asides both throughout the text at relevant points and in a handy appendix."

"We always come cross several decision-making problems in our daily life. Such problems are always conflicting in which many different view points should be satisfied. In politics, business, industrial systems, management science, networks, etc. one often encounters such kind of problems. The most important and difficult part in such problems is the conflict between various objectives and goals. In these problems, one has to find the minimum(or maximum) for several objective functions. Such problems are called vector optimization problems (VOP), multi-criteria optimization problems or multi-objective optimization problems. This volume deals with several different topics / aspects of vector optimization theory ranging from the very beginning to the most recent one. It contains fourteen chapters written by different experts in the field of vector optimization.;We always come cross several decision-making problems in our daily life. "Covering in detail both theoretical and practical perspectives, this book is a self-contained and systematic depiction of current fuzzy stochastic optimization that deploys the fuzzy random variable as a core mathematical tool to model the integrated fuzzy random uncertainty. It proceeds in an orderly fashion from the requisite theoretical aspects of the fuzzy random variable to fuzzy stochastic optimization models and their real-life case studies."

"Extremum-seeking control tracks a varying maximum or minimum in a performance function such as output or cost. It attempts to determine the optimal performance of a control system as it operates, thereby reducing downtime and the need for system analysis. Extremum-seeking Control and Applications is divided into two parts. In the first, the authors review existing analog-optimization-based extremum-seeking control including gradient-, perturbation- and sliding-mode-based control designs. They then propose a novel numerical-optimization-based extremum-seeking control based on optimization algorithms and state regulation. This control design is developed for simple linear time-invariant systems and then extended for a class of feedback linearizable nonlinear systems. The two main optimization algorithms – line search and trust region methods – are analyzed for robustness. Finite-time and asymptotic state regulators are put forward for linear and nonlinear systems respectively. Further design flexibility is achieved using the robustness results of the optimization algorithms and the asymptotic state regulator by which existing nonlinear adaptive control techniques can be introduced for robust design. The approach used is easier to implement and tends to be more robust than those that use perturbation-based extremum-seeking control. The second part of the book deals with a variety of applications of extremum-seeking control: a comparative study of extremum-seeking control schemes in antilock braking system design; source seeking, formation control, collision and obstacle avoidance for groups of autonomous agents, mobile radar networks, and impedance matching. "Here is a book devoted to well-structured and thus efficiently solvable convex optimization problems, with emphasis on conic quadratic and semidefinite programming. The authors present the basic theory underlying these problems as well as their numerous applications in engineering, including synthesis of filters, Lyapunov stability analysis, and structural design. The authors also discuss the complexity issues and provide an overview of the basic theory of state-of-the-art polynomial time interior point methods for linear, conic quadratic, and semidefinite programming. The book's focus on well-structured convex problems in conic form allows for unified theoretical and algorithmical treatment of a wide spectrum of important optimization problems arising in applications.
Lectures on Modern Convex Optimization: Analysis, Algorithms, and Engineering Applications presents and analyzes numerous engineering models, illustrating the wide spectrum of potential applications of the new theoretical and algorithmical techniques emerging from the significant progress taking place in convex optimization. It is hoped that the information provided here will serve to promote the use of these techniques in engineering practice. The book develops a kind of "algorithmic calculus" of convex problems, which can be posed as conic quadratic and semidefinite programs. This calculus can be viewed as a "computationally tractable" version of the standard convex analysis."

"The applications of the theory of Optimal Control of distributed parameters is an extremely wide field and, although a large number of questions remain open, the whole subject continues to expand very rapidly. The author does not attempt to cover the field but does discuss a number of the more interesting areas of application."
