"Komposit sandwich merupakan salah satu material yang berpotensi untuk diterapkan sebagai material penyusun rancang bangun struktur ringan. Telah dilakukan penelitian mengenai sifat mekanik pada komposit sandwich woven S-glass/epoxy dengan inti Polyvinyl chloride foam. Komposit sandwich, yang terdiri dari dua jenis yaitu 00/900/PVC/00/900 dan 00/900/PVC/-450/450, dibuat dengan menggunakan metode hand lay-up, diikuti dengan metode vacuum bagging. Pengukuran massa jenis, pengujian mekanik berupa uji tekuk tiga titik dan uji tekan untuk mengetahui sifat mekanik komposit sandwich ini, serta pengamatan kerusakan menggunakan Scanning Electron Microscope dilakukan. Didapatkan massa jenis yang relatif kecil untuk kedua komposit sandwich, yaitu (0.20 ± 0.01) gr/cm3 dan (0.21 ± 0.01) gr/cm3. Sifat mekanik terbaik didapatkan pada komposit sandwich 00/900/PVC/00/900 dengan kekuatan tekuk, kekuatan geser, dan kekuatan tekan sebesar (51.04 ± 2.49) MPa, (0,39 ± 0.02) MPa dan (4.79 ± 0.12) MPa. Moda kegagalan yang terjadi adalah indentation dan buckling dengan kerusakan pada kulit dan inti.

Sandwich composites are materials that have potential to be used in lightweight structure design. A research on the mechanical properties of a woven S-glass/epoxy sandwich with polyvinyl chloride foam core has been done. The sandwich composites were classified into two types, 00/900/PVC/00/900 and 00/900/PVC/-450/450 and were manufactured with hand lay-up method, followed by vacuum bagging method. Density measurement, three-point bending test, edgewise compression test, and failure observation with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were conducted. Relatively small densities were achieved for these two sandwich composites, (0.20 ± 0.01) gr/cm3 and (0.21 ± 0.01) gr/cm3. The best mechanical properties were obtained in sandwich composite 00/900/PVC/00/900 , with flexural strength, core shear strength, and compression failure stress of (51.04 ± 2.49) MPa, (0,39 ± 0.02) MPa, and (4.79 ± 0.12) MPa. Mode of failure that occured is indentation and buckling with damage to the skin and core."
