ABSTRACT
The paper examines the construction of women in the corpus of Sundanese Mangl magazine 1958 ndash 2013 from the perspectives of corpus linguistics and Barthes rsquo semiotics. The construction is studied based on the usage of five Sundanese nouns referring to women found in the corpus within four periods Guided Democracy ndash Reformation . The result of corpus analysis shows that women are constructed in various identities by every noun referring to them due to the influence of social and cultural factors. Women are getting portrayed as a social group that is more independent and has a significant role not only in the private spheres domestic domain , but also the public spheres. The result of semiotic analysis shows that the signification of women indicated by many expressions to signify them is the extension of meaning through metalanguage. In the meantime, a new sense given to every noun because of new values or perspectives in Sundanese society indicates the extension of meaning resulted from connotation process. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the frequency of nouns referring to women and the recurrent patterns of the noun co occurring with other words are the way that language naturalizes the concept of women. By combining corpus linguistics with Barthes rsquo semiotics, the process of naturalizing the concept of women is possible to be examined through a large quantity of linguistic evidence in within a quite long time span. As a result, the construction of woman in the corpus of Mangl can be explored diachronically in a more objective and detailed way."

"Poststructuralism can be employed as a method to analyse literary work. As text that contains literary expression of human life, literary work is open to interpretation and critical analysis. Poststructural approach deconstructs and reconstructs the conceptual construct of writing, metalanguage, and subjectivity in a text."

"ABSTRAK

Diskusi antara semua orang dari berbagai ras untuk menemukan solusi untuk menghentikan diskriminasi ras sangat dibutuhkan. Adapun temuan-temuan dalam analisis lagu ldquo;Freedom rdquo; menunjukkan bahwa kesempatan bagi perempuan kulit hitam untuk maju berbicara merupakan hal yang dapat diperoleh sekarang, dan mereka akan didukung oleh sesama perempuan kulit hitam.

ABSTRACT
The Black female empowerment is a form of movement that is intersecting both race and gender identities. Beyonc ndash;a Black female artist known for embracing her black identity ndash;produced ldquo;Forward rdquo; and ldquo;Freedom rdquo;, two politically-charged songs in her 2016 album, Lemonade. ldquo;Forward rdquo; focuses on the police brutality against Black people that have been increasing since 2014, whereas ldquo;Freedom rdquo; focuses on empowering Black women to fight back against the oppression against them. Using Roland Barthes rsquo; semiotic theory, this thesis analyses the Black female empowerment motifs by analyzing its lyrics and music videos in order to find the myth behind the movement. The findings in ldquo;Forward rdquo; show how Black people, especially Black women, are deemed ldquo;voiceless rdquo; and a discussion between all people to find solution to end the racial discrimination is urgently needed. While the findings in ldquo;Freedom rdquo; suggest that the opportunity for Black women to speak up is now obtainable, and they will be supported by their fellow Black women.
