"In the US, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals report higher rates of depression compared with heterosexual and cisgender persons. To date, little is known about the mental health of LGBT adults in Thailand. Here, we examined rates and correlates of depression among a volunteer sample of Thai LGBTs. Data were collected as part of a larger cross-sectional survey study. Standardized measures of sexual orientation and gender identity, stress, coping style, and minority stressors were completed. Of the 411 participants, 40.3% met the criteria for depression. In multivariate analyses, the combined influences of sociodemographic factors, general stress, coping strategies, and minority-specific stress variables explained 47.2% of the variance in depression scores (F[16,367]= 20.48, p<.001). Correlates of depression included coping strategies and minority-specific stressors, including experiences of victimization, discrimination, and level of identity concealment. Study findings have implications for psychiatric nursing practice and the development of intervention research."

Gay youth are vulnerable social groups due to mental and physical abuse in their social environment which affects low psychological health. The stress coping mechanism is performed in response to cognitive and behavioral responses to events beyond the capacity and individual sources. There are still few previous studies on how to deal with stress that addresses gay youth. Previous studies have only addressed the general themes of stress coping strategies and stress-tackling resources by gay youth. Previous studies have not discussed too much about the complexity of situations that impact on coping strategies. Though the situation is important because it provides or forms the resources available to gay youth to impact on coping strategies. Therefore, this study aims to explain how strategies to cope with gay youth stress and its complexity to cope with stress. This study spawned several arguments. First, the proliferation of stress in the development of gay youth life. Second, gay youth use many strategies in dealing with stress that is divided into two strategies, problem-focused and emotion-focused. Third, the social context forms the source of coping with stress. Fourth, the Internet has a dual role in the process of coping with gay youth stress. This study used a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews of six gay men aged 16-30 years to describe the meaning and complexity contained in the action to cope with stress."

Homosexual individuals often receive negative attitudes from society. These negative attitudes can be internalized by individuals and become a minority stress called internalized homophobia. Previous research has found that internalized homophobia is associated with depressive symptoms through sense of belonging. This study aims to determine the relationship between internalized homophobia and depressive symptoms, the relationship between sense of belonging and depressive symptoms, and the mediating effect of sense of belonging on the relationship between internalized homophobia and depressive symptoms among homosexual individuals in Indonesia. Participants consisted of 295 gays and lesbians aged 18-37 years who are Indonesian citizens.
Results showed that internalized homophobia was positively and significantly associated with depressive symptoms (r = 0,211, p <0,05) and sense of belonging was negatively and significantly associated with depressive symptoms (r = -0,563, p <0,05). Multiple regression analysis using PROCESS for SPSS model 4 shows that sense of belonging partially mediates the relationship between internalized homophobia and depressive symptoms. Through the results of this research, homosexual individuals can identify internalized homophobia as a risk factor of depressive symptoms and learn the importance of sense of belonging in reducing those symptoms.
