This book considers the multi-parametric Nonlinear Programming (mp-NLP) approaches to explicit approximate NMPC of constrained nonlinear systems, developed by the authors, as well as their applications to various NMPC problem formulations and several case studies. The following types of nonlinear systems are considered, resulting in different NMPC problem formulations; Ø Nonlinear systems described by first-principles models and nonlinear systems described by black-box models; - Nonlinear systems with continuous control inputs and nonlinear systems with quantized control inputs; - Nonlinear systems without uncertainty and nonlinear systems with uncertainties (polyhedral description of uncertainty and stochastic description of uncertainty); - Nonlinear systems, consisting of interconnected nonlinear sub-systems. The proposed mp-NLP approaches are illustrated with applications to several case studies, which are taken from diverse areas such as automotive mechatronics, compressor control, combustion plant control, reactor control, pH maintaining system control, cart and spring system control, and diving computers.

This book is a short primer in engineering mathematics with a view on applications in nonlinear control theory. In particular, it introduces some elementary concepts of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry which offer a set of tools quite different from the traditional approaches to the subject matter. This text begins with the study of elementary set and map theory. Chapters 2 and 3 on group theory and rings, respectively, are included because of their important relation to linear algebra, the group of invertible linear maps (or matrices) and the ring of linear maps of a vector space. Homomorphisms and Ideals are dealt with as well at this stage. Chapter 4 is devoted to the theory of matrices and systems of linear equations. Chapter 5 gives some information on permutations, determinants and the inverse of a matrix. Chapter 6 tackles vector spaces over a field, Chapter 7 treats linear maps resp. linear transformations, and in addition the application in linear control theory of some abstract theorems such as the concept of a kernel, the image and dimension of vector spaces are illustrated. Chapter 8 considers the diagonalization of a matrix and their canonical forms. Chapter 9 provides a brief introduction to elementary methods for solving differential equations and, finally, in Chapter 10, nonlinear control theory is introduced from the point of view of differential algebra.

H∞ control originated from an effort to codify classical control methods, where one shapes frequency response functions for linear systems to meet certain objectives. H∞ control underwent tremendous development in the 1980s and made considerable strides toward systematizing classical control. This book addresses the next major issue of how this extends to nonlinear systems. At the core of nonlinear control theory lie two partial differential equations (PDEs). One is a first-order evolution equation called the information state equation, which constitutes the dynamics of the controller. One can view this equation as a nonlinear dynamical system. Much of this volume is concerned with basic properties of this system, such as the nature of trajectories, stability, and, most important, how it leads to a general solution of the nonlinear H∞ control problem. The second PDE actually builds on a classical type of partial differential inequality (PDI) called a Bellman-Isaacs inequality. While the information state PDE determines the dynamics of the controller, the PDI determines the output of the controller. The authors explore the system theoretic significance of the PDI and present its gross structure. These equations are only a few years old and their study is an expanding area of research. This book also emphasizes the theory effecting computer solvability of the information state equation, which at the outset looks numerically intractable, but which surprisingly is in many cases tractable. For example, the theory shows that careful initialization has a major influence on computer solvability. The authors keep the book self-contained by using the appendices to help explain certain prerequisite material. The reader should have a basic knowledge of control theory, real analysis and differential equations, nonlinear operator theory, and nonlinear PDEs.

...... Over the past half-century, vehicle safety technology has evolved considerably. Antilock braking system (ABS) is now one of the most important active safety system for road vehicles since it prevents the wheels from locking up and reduces the total braking distance while retaining drivability during braking. Recent technological advances in actuators have enabled a continuous modulation of the braking torque, thereby allowing us to formulate active braking control as a classical regulation problem. The main objective of this research is to develop a controller for ABS based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy, which allows the desired wheel slip to be reached and improves the vehicle?s braking distance in any road condition. A double-corner vehicle is employed as the controlled plant since it provides a sufficiently rich description of the braking dynamics, including the load transfer phenomena. Discrete responses of this model are identified using Least Square method to reproduce the model in a state-space form as the main component of MPC design. As for the tyre-road friction model in this research, the Burckhardt friction model will be employed, as it only has three parameters to model many different tyre-road friction conditions. Wheel slip is chosen as the controlled variable since its dynamics is more robust than speed deceleration control. The designed MPC is able to perform optimal braking in dry asphalt, wet asphalt, and icy road condition

Saturation nonlinearities are ubiquitous in engineering systems, every physical actuator or sensor is subject to saturation owing to its maximum and minimum limits. Input saturation is an operating condition that is well known to the control community for its “side effects”, which cause conventional controllers to lose their closed-loop performance as well as control authority in stabilization. Therefore, the practical application of control theory cannot avoid taking into account saturation nonlinearities in actuators, explicitly dealing with constraints in control design.

This textbook contains the essential knowledge in modeling, simulation, analysis, and applications in dealing with biological cellular control systems. In particular, the book shows how to use the law of mass balance and the law of mass action to derive an enzyme kinetic model, the Michaelis-Menten function or the Hill function, how to use a current-voltage relation, Nernst potential equilibrium equation, and Hodgkin and Huxley's models to model an ionic channel or pump, and how to use the law of mass balance to integrate these enzyme or channel models into a complete feedback control system. The book also illustrates how to use data to estimate parameters in a model, how to use MATLAB to solve a model numerically, how to do computer simulations, and how to provide model predictions. Furthermore, the book demonstrates how to conduct a stability and sensitivity analysis on a model.

Reset control systems addresses the analysis for reset control treating both its basic form, and some useful variations of the reset action and reset condition. The issues regarding reset control, concepts and motivation, analysis tools, and the application of design methodologies to real-world examples, are given thorough coverage. The text opens with a historical perspective which moves from the seminal work of the Clegg integrator and Horowitz FORE to more recent approaches based on impulsive/hybrid control systems and explains the motivation for reset compensation. Preliminary material is also included. The focus then turns to stability analysis for systems using techniques which account for various time- and frequency-domain criteria. The final section of the book is centered on control systems design and application. The PI+CI compensator is detailed as are a proposed frequency domain approach using quantitative feedback theory and ideas for design improvement. Design examples are given.

[Computer-aided nonlinear control system design provides such an approach based on the use of describing functions. The text deals with a large class of nonlinear systems without restrictions on the system order, the number of inputs and/or outputs or the number, type or arrangement of nonlinear terms. The strongly software-oriented methods detailed facilitate fulfillment of tight performance requirements and help the designer to think in purely nonlinear terms, avoiding the expedient of linearization which can impose substantial and unrealistic model limitations and drive up the cost of the final product. Design procedures are presented in a step-by-step algorithmic format each step being a functional unit with outputs that drive the other steps. This procedure may be easily implemented on a digital computer with example problems from mechatronic and aerospace design being used to demonstrate the techniques discussed.
