The method of least squares was discovered by Gauss in 1795. It has since become the principal tool to reduce the influence of errors when fitting models to given observations. Today, applications of least squares arise in a great number of scientific areas, such as statistics, geodetics, signal processing, and control.
In the last 20 years there has been a great increase in the capacity for automatic data capturing and computing. Least squares problems of large size are now routinely solved. Tremendous progress has been made in numerical methods for least squares problems, in particular for generalized and modified least squares problems and direct and iterative methods for sparse problems. Until now there has not been a monograph that covers the full spectrum of relevant problems and methods in least squares.
This volume gives an in-depth treatment of topics such as methods for sparse least squares problems, iterative methods, modified least squares, weighted problems, and constrained and regularized problems. The more than 800 references provide a comprehensive survey of the available literature on the subject.

This compact yet thorough tutorial is the perfect introduction to the basic concepts of solving partial differential equations (PDEs) using parallel numerical methods. In just eight short chapters, the authors provide readers with enough basic knowledge of PDEs, discretization methods, solution techniques, parallel computers, parallel programming, and the run-time behavior of parallel algorithms to allow them to understand, develop, and implement parallel PDE solvers. Examples throughout the book are intentionally kept simple so that the parallelization strategies are not dominated by technical details.
A Tutorial on Elliptic PDE Solvers and Their Parallelization is a valuable aid for learning about the possible errors and bottlenecks in parallel computing. One of the highlights of the tutorial is that the course material can run on a laptop, not just on a parallel computer or cluster of PCs, thus allowing readers to experience their first successes in parallel computing in a relatively short amount of time.

Many physical problems are most naturally described by systems of differential and algebraic equations. This book describes some of the places where differential-algebraic equations (DAE's) occur. The basic mathematical theory for these equations is developed and numerical methods are presented and analyzed. Examples drawn from a variety of applications are used to motivate and illustrate the concepts and techniques.
This classic edition, originally published in 1989, is the only general DAE book available. It not only develops guidelines for choosing different numerical methods, it is the first book to discuss DAE codes, including the popular DASSL code. An extensive discussion of backward differentiation formulas details why they have emerged as the most popular and best understood class of linear multistep methods for general DAE's. New to this edition is a chapter that brings the discussion of DAE software up to date.
The objective of this monograph is to advance and consolidate the existing research results for the numerical solution of DAE's. The authors present results on the analysis of numerical methods, and also show how these results are relevant for the solution of problems from applications. They develop guidelines for problem formulation and effective use of the available mathematical software and provide extensive references for further study.

Finite element solution of boundary value problems: theory and computation provides a thorough, balanced introduction to both the theoretical and the computational aspects of the finite element method for solving boundary value problems for partial differential equations. Although significant advances have been made in the finite element method since this book first appeared in 1984, the basics have remained the same, and this classic, well-written text explains these basics and prepares the reader for more advanced study. Useful as both a reference and a textbook, complete with examples and exercises, it remains as relevant today as it was when originally published.

This book has become the standard for a complete, state-of-the-art description of the methods for unconstrained optimization and systems of nonlinear equations. Originally published in 1983, it provides information needed to understand both the theory and the practice of these methods and provides pseudocode for the problems. The algorithms covered are all based on Newton's method or "quasi-Newton" methods, and the heart of the book is the material on computational methods for multidimensional unconstrained optimization and nonlinear equation problems. The republication of this book by SIAM is driven by a continuing demand for specific and sound advice on how to solve real problems.

Approximate global convergence and adaptivity for coefficient inverse problems is the first book in which two new concepts of numerical solutions of multidimensional Coefficient Inverse Problems (CIPs) for a hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) are presented. Two central questions for CIPs are addressed, how to obtain a good approximations for the exact solution without any knowledge of a small neighborhood of this solution, and how to refine it given the approximation.
The book also combines analytical convergence results with recipes for various numerical implementations of developed algorithms. The developed technique is applied to two types of blind experimental data, which are collected both in a laboratory and in the field. The result for the blind backscattering experimental data collected in the field addresses a real world problem of imaging of shallow explosives.
