The Philosophy of Design is an introduction to the fundamental philosophical issues raised by the contemporary practice of design. The first book to systematically examine design from the perspective of contemporary philosophy, it offers a broad perspective, ranging across key philosophical areas such as aesthetics, epistemology, metaphysics and ethics. The first part of the book explores central issues about the nature of design and its products, and the rationality of design methods. A central theme is that Modernist ideas, such as those offered by Loos and Gropius, provide important responses to these philosophical issues. In the second part of the book, these Modernist ideas serve as touchstones in the exploration of key issues for design, including: the place of aesthetics in design; design's relation to personal expression; the meaning of function; and design's relation to consumerism. The social responsibility of designers, and the impact of design practice on ethical reasoning are also discussed. Written in an accessible style, The Philosophy of Design presents a new perspective on design and a provocative reassessment of the Modernist legacy. ABSTRAK
PT Garuda Indonesia diketahui sebagai salah satu Badan
Usaha Milik Negara yang mengemban misi sebagai perusahaan
penerbangan nasional penbawa bendera negara (flag carrier).
Konsekuensinya PT Garuda Indonesia dituntut untuk menjadi
perusahaan yang menguntungkan dengan mengindahkan kaidah
kaidah dunia usaha yang berlaku umum, mulai dari cara
pengelolaannya sampai kepada memenangkan persaingan di
pasaran bebas.
Persaingan antar perusahaan penerbangan domestik
maupun internasional kini semakin tajam dan ketat. Banyak
hal yang menjadi penyebabnya, antara lain globalisasi dan
resesi ekonomi yang berkepanjangan. Ketatnya persaingan
ditandai dengan masuknya maskapai penerbangan dalam suatu
sektor penerbangan yang dimungkinkan melalui agreement
antar negara, modernisasi armada, pemberian pelayanan yang
sangat beragam dan penyediaan fasilitas yang super canggih.
Kondisi persaingan ini juga berdampak pada Garuda
Indonesia. Dalam kurun waktu 10 tahun terakhir, tahun 1993
tercatat sebagai tahun yang kurang menguntungkan bagi
Garuda. Pada tahun tersebut, pasar wisata Indonesia,
khususnya Jepang, menurun dibandingkan tahun-tahun
sebelumnya sekalipun dalam persentasi yang kecil. Masalah
masalah yang terkait dengan fenomena ini antara lain :
penurunan jumlah penumpang, load factor dan revenue.
Faktor-faktor yang disinyalir melatarbelakangi masalah
tersebut diatas adalah resesi yang menghinggapi dunia -
khususnya Jepang, krisis Teluk Parsi yang berawal sejak
tahun 1991, globalisasi dalan segala aspek kehidupan dan
masuknya JAL sebagai kompetitor kuat dalam rute penerbangan
langsung Tokyo-Jakarta.
Dalam situasi seperti ini tentu saja Garuda perlu
memiliki manajemen operasional yang efisien dan efektif
agar dapat unggul dalam persaingan. Salah satu strategi
dalam kerangka manajemen operasional adalah perencanaan dan
pendisainan produk yang handal guna mengantisipasi gejolak
dan perubahan dalam era globalisasi ini, dengan
memperhatikan resources perusahaan dan kebutuhan/keinginan
pasar maupun reaksi pesaing. Perencanaan dan pendisainan
mencakup keseluruhan aspek/feature yang melengkapi produk
secara keseluruhan baik fisik maupun service.
Dengan strategi ini diharapkan Garuda dapat membawa
diri menjadi maskapai penerbangan internasional yang
berorientadi pada kepuasan penumpang.

Perubahan pasar global yang cepat menyebabkan industri memerlukan strategi baru untuk merespon kebutuhan konsumen dan memuaskan kebutuhan pasar agar lebih efisien dan lebih cepat. Hal ini dilakukan dengan mengimplementasikan peralatan teknik untuk lebih cepat dalam menyediakan produk yang berkualitas tinggi dengan harga yang kompetitif terhadap kebutuhan konsumen.
Proses assembling merupakan proses yang memakan waktu yang cukup besar dalam proses manufaktur (53% dari total waktu produksi dan 22% ongkos buruh). DFA adalah salah satu sistem perencanaan assembling, yang menganalisa desain komponen maupun produk secara keseluruhan, yang dimulai dari awal proses desain, sehingga kesulitan-kesulitan assembling dapat diatasi sebelum komponen diproduksi. Sistem ini bertujuan untuk mempermudah proses perakitan sehingga waktu dan cost assembling dapat diturunkan. Keuntungan dari DFA ini adalah mengurangi jumlah perubahan desain dan secara tidak langsung mengurangi biaya dan waktu. Pada saat yang sama, memenuhi kebutuhan pelanggan.
Untuk itu pada penelitian ini dilakukan perancangan dan pengembangan produk vaccine carrier yang mempertimbangkan metode Product Design dan Design For Assembly pada perancangan vaccine carrier tersebut. Dari hasil perancangan dan analisa DFA pada produk vaccine carrier, didapat total waktu assembling untuk desain awal adalah 519,34 detik dengan nilai efficiency 18% sedangkan total waktu assembling untuk redesain adalah 405,63 detik dengan nilai efficiency 24%.
Global marketplace is changing so rapidly that industrialist need to adopt new strategy to respond customer requirement and in order to satisfy the market needs more efficiency and quickly. That is reason to implement engineering tools quickly in supplied high quality product with competitive price to meet costumer requirement.
Assembling process is take production time more than 50% from manufacture process (assembling process is 53% from total production time and 22% from labor cost). DFA is one technique of assembling planning system that analyzed component design and overall product from beginning to complete product. DFA is use to simplified assembling process and reduce assembling cost to meet consumer requirement.
This thesis is design and develops product design of vaccine carrier that used Product Design and Design For Assembly method in design product of vaccine carrier. The results of the research are operation time for fisrt design is 519.34 second with design efficiency about 18% and the operation time for redesign is 405.63 second with design efficiency about 24%.

Batik crafting is a job done in a sitting position. The design of a stool itself affects the sitting position of workers using it. This paper proposes an optimal design for batik stool (dingklik) which is tested using the task analysis toolkit in the virtual environment with the JackTM 6.1 software. An anthopometric measurement is done to create the suitable dimension for all users of the batik stool. This research is conducted to reduce MSD found in previous research, by designing ergonomically friendly stool to support batik crafters. This improved design is proved to be ergonomically friendly due to the decreased PEI result compared to the current design.
