"The paper describes several types of referents, including internal, external and system referents, and explains that they are the key for choosing actions or inactions. Individuals and organizations use these referents to get understandings of themselves, to encourage learning and to bounce back from failure. Using social cognition and social comparison literature, the paper focuses its explanation on the reasons why a particular type of referent is used and on its consequences on individuals' and organizations' ability to learn, to bounce back from difficult circumstances, or on their inability to survive. The paper concludes that motivation and ability to choose the right reference may assist individuals and organizations to rise from difficulties and to achieve more, while inability to choose the right reference may result in dire consequences."

"Skripsi ini membahas konsep pemberian nama diri pada budaya Jawa dan termasuk ke dalam penelitian semantik-kebudayaan. Ada sebuah hubungan antara nama diri, makna dari nama diri, dan ciri-ciri referensialnya. Dalam budaya Jawa, ada sebuah harapan yang ingin disampaikan oleh orang tua agar kelak anak tersebut bisa mencontoh makna nama dirinya. Pola pemberian nama diri ini ternyata juga berlaku pada pemberian nama diri pada tokoh dalam cerita fiktif, salah satu contoh adalah tokoh wayang yang terkenal yaitu Bima. Akan tetapi, ada sedikit perbedaan bahwa dalam nama diri tokoh cerita fiktif bukan harapan yang muncul dari makna nama diri tersebut tetapi konsistensi penggambaran di dalam cerita antara nama diri, makna nama diri, dan ciri referensialnya. Hasil dari penelitian ini membuktikan konsistensi orang Jawa dalam pemberian nama, tidak hanya dalam kehidupan nyata tetapi juga dalam cerita fiktif.

This thesis discusses the concept of self-naming Javanese culture belongs to a semantic-cultural research. There is a relationship between a proper name, a meaning of the proper name itself, and characteristics of its reference. In Javanese culture, parents sometimes expect that later their children can imitate or apply the meaning of the name itself in real life. This pattern also applies to naming fictional characters in the story, e.g. Bima, one of the most famous puppet fictional characters. But, there is a slight difference in the naming of the fictional characters. It is not about parents? hope that relates into their children?s names but the consistency of the depiction in the story between the proper name, the meaning of the proper name itself, and characteristics of its reference. The results of this study prove that the consistency of the Javanese parents in giving names does not apply only in a real life, but also in a world of literature for fictional characters."
