Sella turcica is an anatomic point in the cephalometric tracing of orthodontic treatment. The formula for body mass index (BMI) is calculated by using the height and weight of an individual. Objective: To evaluate the size and morphology of the sella turcica in healthy, overweight, and obese patients. Methods: The 66 individuals (24 males and 42 females; mean age, 15.05 until 1.61 years) selected for the study were divided into three groups: obese; overweight; and healthy, according to the BMI percentile classifcation. The length, diameter and dept measurements of the sella turcica were measured on a lateral cephalometric radiograph. Results: No statistically signifcant differences were found among the groups, although the length, diameter, and depth of the sella turcica were higher in healthy individuals (P > 0.05). Moreover, the normal sella turcica, compared with other sella turcica variations, was more common in 64.7% of the healthy patients, 61.1% of the overweight patients, and 64.3% of the obese patients. Conclusions: Normal sella turcica is more common than other types of sella turcica. In addition, no signifcant difference was found among the groups in terms of length, diameter, and depth of the sella turcica.

ABSTRAK Abstrak Berbahasa Indonesia/Berbahasa Lain (Selain Bahasa Inggris): Pendahuluan: Kalsifikasi sella turcica (sella turcica bridge) dan kalsifikasi tulang atlas (ponticulus posticus) dapat digunakan untuk memprediksi terjadinya impaksi kaninus di palatal dan hipodonsia. Hal ini dapat terjadi karena sella turcica, tulang skeletal kepala dan leher, serta sel epitel dental memiliki keterlibatan gen dan berasal dari sel embriologi yang sama.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat hubungan antara sella turcica bridge dengan ponticulus posticus serta hubungan kedua struktur anatomi tersebut dengan impaksi kaninus di palatal dan hipodonsia. Metode: Penelitian dilakukan secara potong lintang, dengan subjek sejumlah 51 foto sefalometri lateral pasien dari ras Deutro Malayid. Usia subjek diatas 14 tahun yang dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok, yaitu 17 foto sefalometri pada kelompok impaksi kaninus, 17 foto sefalometri pada kelompok hipodonsia dibandingkan dengan 17 foto sefalometri pada kelompok kontrol. Setiap foto sefalometri lateral dilihat klasifikasi sella turcica bridge dan ponticulus posticus (tidak ada kalsifikasi, kalsifikasi parsial, dan kalsifikasi lengkap). Hubungan antara sella turcica bridge dan ponticulus posticus dengan kelompok impaksi dan hipodonsia, serta antara sella turcica bridge dengan ponticulus posticus dianalisis dengan menggunakan uji independent chi square dan uji korelasi Kendall. Hasil: Terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara sella turcica bridge dengan impaksi kaninus dan hipodonsia, serta antara ponticulus posticus dengan impaksi dan hipodonsia masing-masing, dengan kekuatan korelasi sedang, namun tidak terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara sella turcica bridge dengan ponticulus posticus. Kesimpulan: Sella turcica bridge dan ponticulus posticus banyak ditemukan pada pasien dengan impaksi kaninus di palatal dan hipodonsia, sehingga adanya sella turcica bridge dan ponticulus posticus yang sudah terbentuk sejak awal dapat menjadi penanda adanya kemungkinan impaksi dan hipodonsia.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Calcification of sella turcica known as sella turcica bridge and calcification of atlas vertebra known as ponticulus posticus might predict the occurance of palatally impacted canine and hypodontia. This might occur due to sella turcica, neck and shoulder skeletal development and dental epithelial cells share a common gene and embryologic origin. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of sella turcica bridge and ponticulus posticus with palatally impacted canine and hypodontia and the association between sella turcica bridge and ponticulus posticus. Methods: This cross sectional study was performed using lateral cephalogram of 51 Deutro malayid patients, age above 14, and devided into 3 groups. First group consist of 17 cephalograms palatally impacted canine patient, second group consist of 17 cephalograms hypodontia patient, compared with 17 cephalograms control patient. The type of sella turcica bridge and ponticulus posticus (no calcification, partial calcification and complete calcification) were evaluated on every lateral cephalogram. The association between sella turcica bridge with palatally impacted canine and hypodontia, ponticulus posticus with palatally impacted canine and hypodontia and the association between sella turcica bridge with ponticulus posticus was analyzed using independent Chi-Square and Kendall correlation. Results: The calcification of sella turcica bridge and ponticulus posticus in palatally impacted canine and hypodontia patient is increased when compared to control patient. There is a significant association between sella turcica bridge with palatally impacted canine and hypodontia, ponticulus posticus with palatally impacted canine and hypodontia but there is no significant association between sella turcica bridge with ponticulus posticus. Conclusion: Calcification of sella turcica bridge and ponticulus posticus is frequently found in patients with palatally impacted canine and hypodontia. The very early appearance during development of sella turcica bridge and ponticulus posticus should alert clinicians to possible impacted canine and hypodontia in life later.

Latar Belakang: Sella turcica merupakan anatomi yang penting untuk diteliti dikarenakan deformitas bentuknya dapat menjadi petunjuk utama adanya kelainan skeletal. Hal ini dapat mempengaruhi fungsi fossa hipofisis dikarenakan letaknya yang berada di tengah fossa hipofisis dan dapat menghambat pertumbuhan tulang pada regio kraniofasial seperti maksila, mandibula, palatal dan frontonasal. Tujuan: untuk mengetahui bentuk variasi morfologi sella turcica pada kelompok umur tertentu di RSKGM FKG UI. Metode: Radiograf sefalometri lateral digital pada pasien dengan rentang usia 17 tahun ke atas sebesar 258 sampel ditracing dan bentuk morfologi sella turcica dinilai. Hasil: Frekuensi morfologi sella turcica tertinggi yaitu morfologi normal sebesar 52,3%, diikuti dengan morfologi irregular sella turcica sebesar 13,2%, morfologi bridging sella turcica sebesar 10,9%, morfologi oblique dan pyramidal sebesar 9,7%, dan morfologi double contour sebesar 4,3%. Kesimpulan: Bentuk variasi morfologi sella turcica di RSKGM FKG UI yang paling sering ditemukan adalah morfologi normal. ......Background: Sella turcica is an anatomy that is important to study because its deformity form can be indication key of the presence of skeletal abnormalities. This may affect the  function of the pituitary fossa due to its location in the center of the pituitary fossa and can inhibit bone growth in the craniofacial region such as the maxilla, mandible, palatal, and frontonasal. Objective: To determine the shape of the morphological variation of sella turcica in certain age groups in RSKGM FKG UI. Methods: Lateral cephalometric digital radiographs in patients with an age range of 17 years and over by 258 samples traced and the morphological forms of sella turcica assessed. Results: The most frequence morphology of sella turcica is the normal morphology which is 52,3%, followed by the irregular morphology of sella turcica is 13,2%, the morphology of sella turcica is 10,9%, oblique and pyramidal morphology is 9,7%, and the morphology of double contour is 4,3%. Conclusion: The most shape of the morphological variation of sella turcica that can be found in RSKGM FKG UI is normal morphology.

Latar Belakang: Celah bibir dan langit-langit merupakan kelainan bawaan yang umum ditemukan yang terjadi saat perkembangan janin karena kegagalan proses pertumbuhan organ wajah. Defisiensi pertumbuhan maksila secara tiga dimensi (3D) sering ditemukan pada penderita celah bibir dan langit-langit terutama pada kasus unilateral. Pasien yang telah menjalani prosedur operasi menunjukkan adanya penurunan tinggi basis kranial, maksila yang lebih pendek, retrograntik maksila berlebihan dan inklinasi gigi insisif atas dan bawah yang lebih ke lingual. Perawatan bertahap dibutuhkan untuk penanganan pasien dengan celah bibir dan langit-langit seperti bedah perbaikan tulang alveolar, restorasi prostodontik, dan koreksi dental definitif. Tujuan: Menganalisis pengaruh labioplasti dan palatoplasti terhadap tinggi maksila, volume sinus maksilaris dan ukuran sella turcica pada pasien celah bibir dan langit-langit unilateral. Material dan Metode: Penelitian analitik observasional dengan desain potong lintang. Subjek penelitian ini adalah anak berusia ³13 tahun dengan celah bibir dan langit-langit unilateral, telah dilakukan labioplasti dan palatoplasti, serta tidak mengikuti prosedur perawatan ortodontik cekat di RSAB Harapan Kita, Jakarta dalam kurun waktu 2011-2013. Berdasarkan kriteria inklusi dan eksklusi diperoleh jumlah samepl sebanyak 12 subjek. Setiap subjek dilakukan pengambilan gambaran radiografi CBCT untuk penilaian tinggi maksila, volume sinus maksilaris dan ukuran sella turcica. Perbandingan tinggi maksila dan volume sinus maksilaris dilakukan pada sisi celah dan sisi normal, sedangkan perbandingan ukuran sella turcica dilakukan secara deskriptif menggunakan data sekunder. Hasil penelitian: Terdapat perbedaan tinggi maksila dan volume sinus maksilaris yang signifikan antara sisi celah dan sisi normal (p=0,00 dan p=0,01). Terdapat perbedaan ukuran lebar dan kedalaman sella turcica antara subjek dengan kelompok kontrol. Kesimpulan: Labioplasti dan palatoplasti mempengaruhi tinggi maksila, volume sinus maksilaris dan ukuran sella turcica pada pasien dengan celah bibir dan langit-langit unilateral ......Background: Cleft lip and palate is a common congenital disorder that formed during fetal development due to failure of the developmental processes of the face. Three-dimensional (3D) maxillary growth deficiency is often found in patients with cleft lip and palate, particularly in unilateral cases. Patients who had undergone surgical procedures show a decrease on cranial base height, shorter maxilla, severe maxillary retrograntic and more lingual inclination of upper and lower incisor teeth. Multistage treatment is neccessary for patients with the lips and palate such as alveolar bone repair, prosthodontic restoration, and definitive dental correction. Objective: To analyze the effect of labioplasty and palatoplasty to maxillary height, maxillary sinus volume and sella turcica size in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Materials and Methods: Observational analytic study with cross-sectional design. The subjects of this study were children ³13-years-old with unilateral cleft lip and palate, had undergone labioplasty and palatoplasty, and did not undergo fixed orthodontic treatment procedures at RSAB Harapan Kita, Jakarta in the period of 2011-2013. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 12 subjects were obtained. Each subject took a CBCT radiographic to assess the maxillary height, maxillary sinus volume and sella turcica size. Comparison of maxillary height and maxillary sinus volume was performed on the cleft and normal sides, while the comparison of the size of the sella turcica was performed descriptively using secondary data. Results: There are significant differences in the maxilla height and maxillary sinus volume between the cleft side and the normal side (p = 0.00 and p = 0.01). There is a difference in width and height of the sella turcica between the subject and the control group. Conclusion: Labioplasty and palatoplasty affect maxillary height, maxillary sinus volume and sella turcica size in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate.
