"[ ABSTRAK
Film To Livemerupakan film yang diadaptasi dari novel karya Yu Hua(余华) yang dipublikasikan pada tahun 1992 dengan judul yang sama dengan karya filmnya. Film ini merupakan film garapan dari sutradara generasi kelima yang terkenal bernama Zhang Yimou(张艺谋). Film ini merupakan film yang menceritakan mengenai kehidupan keluarga Xu Fugui(徐富贵)dan usaha mereka untuk bertahan hidup di beberapa dekade sejarah Cina yang dinodai dengan perang, perselisihan internal, bencana alam dan kelaparan, serta kekacauan politik.Sepanjang cerita di dalam film, sosok Mao Zedong (毛泽东)tidak ditampilkan sebagai tokoh dalam film tetapi ditampilkan dalam beragam bentuk seperti foto, lukisan, syair lagu dan dialog.Rumusan masalah yang ingin dijawab dalam penelitian ini adalahapakah makna dari sosok Mao dalam film To Live. Penulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji makna dari sosok Mao dalam berbagai bentuk yang ditampilkan dalam film To Live. Dalam melakukan penulisan, penulis menggunakan metode analisis deskriptifdengan teori semiotik Peirce.
ABSTRACT To Live is a movie that adopted from Yu Hua?s (余华)novel which is publicated in 1992 with the same title as the movie title. This movie was created by fifth generation director, Zhang Yimou (张艺谋). The movies tell us about Xu Fugui?s family life and how they get hard to survive through decades of wars, internal friction, disaster and starvation, and political madness. In the whole story, Mao Zedong never been showed as a movie?s character but as many object like photo, paint, song lyric, and dialogue. This paper is about to answer on what is the meaning of Mao figure in this To Live movie. This paper have objective to examine the meaning of Mao figure which appear as difference object in To Live movie. "[ ABSTRAK
Film merupakan salah satu sarana komunikasi massa untuk menyampaikan pesan melalui simbol-simbol yang muncul di dalam adegan film. Tak sedikit pula film dijadikan sebagai sarana untuk menyampaikan pandangan tentang suatu kondisi masyarakat tertentu pasca terjadinya suatu peristiwa sejarah besar di suatu wilayah. Film Coming Home adalah salah satunya yang menggambarkan kondisi sebuah keluarga yang menjadi korban atas peristiwa Revolusi Kebudayaan di Tiongkok pada tahun 1966-1976 yang masih menyisakan kesedihan walau peristiwa tersebut telah lama dinyatakan selesai. Melalui pendekatan semiotik, penulisan ini bertujuan menganalisis simbol angka lima yang juga muncul di dalam lima adegan film Coming Home sebagai gambaran kondisi suatu keluarga yang masih menjadi korban pasca Revolusi Kebudayaan.

Coming Home film is one that describes the condition of a family who became victims of the events of the Cultural Revolution in China in 1966-1976 with lingering sadness even though the event has long finished. "Tesis yang berjudul Konotasi Tanda Verbal Bahasa Inggris pada Iklan Nokia Berbahasa Indonesia ini merupakan kajian semiotik kultural Barthes. Objek penelitian ini adalah dua puluh enam iklan Nokia dalam majalah Gogirl, Gadis, dan Hai bulan Januari hingga Juni 2008. Dua puluh enam iklan tersebut terdiri atas sepuluh varian iklan yang kemudian dikategorikan ke dalam lima kelompok. Kategori tersebut didasarkan pada tipe Nokia yang diiklankan (Nokia 5310 dan 5610, Nokia 2600 Classic, Nokia N Series, Nokia N81 dan N81 8GB, dan Nokia Black Edition). Pilihan kategori berdasarkan tipe ini didasarkan pada alasan bahwa setiap tipe memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda-beda. Karakteristik tersebut ditonjolkan dalam iklan untuk mengkomunikasikan positioning produk. Dengan demikian, dalam penyajiannya hasil analisis akan dikelompokkan ke dalam lima kategori.
Kajian ini merupakan kajian teks yang didasari oleh teori konotasi Barthes, khususnya kajian tanda verbal bahasa Inggris yang diselipkan di dalam iklan Nokia tersebut. Jadi, tanda verbal bahasa Inggris dalam iklan-iklan Nokia berbahasa Indonesia tersebut dianalisis konotasinya untuk mengetahui citra dan positioning produk yang diiklankan. Analisis data juga didasarkan pada sudut pandang pengiklan dan pembaca iklan. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini akan mengungkap tujuan pengiklan menyelipkan tanda verbal bahasa Inggris pada iklan Nokia berbahasa Indonesia dan persepsi pembaca iklan atas penyelipan bahasa Inggris tersebut.
Berdasarkan hasil wawancara dan analisis yang dilakukan, penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa tanda verbal bahasa Inggris yang diselipkan pada iklan Nokia berbahasa Indonesia memberikan citra tertentu pada produk yang diiklankan. Nokia dicitrakan sebagai ponsel yang ?berkualitas?, ?internasional?, ?bergengsi?, dan ?modern?. Citra tersebut menunjang upaya pengiklan melakukan positioning.

Connotation of English verbal signs in advertisements of Nokia is an analysis based on Barthes? cultural semiotics. The objects of this research are twenty six ads in three teenagers? magazines (Gogirl, Gadis, and Hai published from January through June 2008). Those twenty six ads consist of ten variants of advertisements which advertise five types of Nokia, namely Nokia 5310 and 5610, Nokia 2600 Classic, Nokia N Series, Nokia N81 and N81 8GB, and Nokia Black Edition. Each type has different characteristics. These characteristics are the focus in advertisement to communicate products? positioning. Therefore, the presentation of the results of analysis is categorized into five groups, based on those Nokia?s types.
This research is an analysis of text based on Barthes? connotation theory, particularly on English verbal signs in the Nokia ads. Accordingly, the verbal signs are analyzed to obtain their connotations which are used for identifying the products? images and their positioning. In addition, both advertiser and readers? point of view are analyzed to reveal the purpose and the readers? perception of inserting English verbal signs in the Nokia ads.
In accordance with the results of interviews and the analysis, this research shows that the insertion of English verbal signs in bahasa Indonesia advertisements gives particular image on the advertised products. Nokia receives an image as a qualified, international, prestigious, and modern phone cell. Those images, then, support advertiser in communicating product?s positioning.
