Dalam sejarah, salah satu penyebab konflik yang sering berulang adalah konflik agama. Salah satu bentuk kasus ini terjadi pada orang-orang Romani selama Abad Pertengahan Eropa, karena mereka menjadi sasaran prasangka dari umat Kristen dan Katolik Eropa. Ini menjadi masalah bagi orang-orang Romani karena kekuatan Gereja menyaingi kekuatan negara pada saat itu. Kasus seperti itu ditunjukkan dalam adaptasi musikal The Hunchback of Notre-Dame karya Victor Hugo (1831) produksi Walt Disney, yang dibawakan oleh La Jolla Playhouse pada tahun 2014. One such case happened on the Romani people during the Middle Ages of Europe, as they were the targets of prejudice from the European Christians and Catholics. This was problematic to the Romani people as the power of the Church rivalled the power of the state at the time. Such a case was demonstrated in Walt Disney’s musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831), performed by La Jolla Playhouse in 2014. By exploring the racial profiling of the Romani people in the musical and examining of the antagonist’s actions against them, we can see how religion was used by the antagonist as an instrument of power to exert prejudice.
