"This paper presents a critical analysis of the factors shaping the interaction between multinationals and trade unions in indonesia, focusing on recent period of democratization following the downfall of the Suharto regime. It has been suggested that union growth risks undermining Indonesia's competitive advantages (cheap labour) and could encourage the exit of multinationals to cheaper competitors. In order to rest this proposition, two case studies were conducted: one in automotive industry and the other in the banking industry. The paper first provides an overview of multinational activity and FDI in Indonesia, and their interaction with a nascent union movement. This is followed by presenting he findings of interviews conducted at the multinational enterprises with managers and union officials; to provide empirical insights into the bargaining process. The final part of the paper provides a preliminary assessment of the impact of union behaviour on MNC profitability and competitiveness in indonesia. In contrast to traditional views of unions as impeding MNC profitability and "encouraging" exit, the paper finds that unions and MNCs can engage in constructive partnerships, but that pressures and contradictions in the relationship remain."

"Argumentasi utama penelitian ini adalah majunya pasangan Obon Tabroni dan Bambang Sumaryono sebagai calon bupati dan wakil bupati jalur independen adalah bukti semakin menguatnya FSPMI sebagai political unionism arena politik elektoral. Asumsi penelitian ini adalah keterlibatan FSPMI di arena politik elektoral pada Pilkada 2017 di Kabupaten Bekasi menandakan bahwa serikat buruh sebagai kendaraan politik di arena politik formal. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis ekspalanitif dengan wawancara mendalam sebagai data primer dan studi pustaka serta berbagai dokumen lain sebagai data sekunder. Adapun temuan penelitian ini adalah ada dua hal penting upaya FSPMI sebagai political unionism pada arena politik. Pertama, dalam konteks peran internal, serikat pekerja berupaya untuk mengoptimakan berbagai dukungan dari berbagai serikat buruh. Situasi ini mendeskripsikan bahwa FSPMI mentransformasikan identitas anggota serikat sebagai buruh (labour) ke arah identitas anggota sebagai warga negara (citizen). Kedua, peran eksternal adalah FSPMI berupaya untuk membangun aliansi lebih luas (broader alliance) dengan berbagai kelompok non buruh untuk memastikan dukungan dan solidaritas antar kelas pada arena politik elektoral. Namun upaya tersebut mengalami kegagalan dan hambatan dikarenakan oleh kapasitas serikat buruh, fragmentasi serikat buruh, dan pemilih pragmatis di arena politik elektoral yang diluar kendali serikat buruh. Temuan lain penelitian ini adalah adanya bentuk baru konsep political unionism dan berbeda dengan konsep political unionism yang selama ini berkembang, yakni engagement dengan partai politik. Bentuk baru serikat buruh sebagai political unionism ini adalah tanpa engagement dengan partai politik. Bentuk baru serikat buruh sebagai political unionism terjadi dikarenakan oleh terbukanya ruang demokratisasi, dan dikuti dengan kesempatan politik yang diatur di dalam aturan main pemilu.

The main argument of this research is the appearance of Obon Tabroni and running mate Bambang Sumaryono to run as an independent regent candidate in Bekasi, West Java is evidence of the increasing strength of FSPMI as political unionism in the electoral arena. The assumption of this study is FSPMI's involvement in the electoral arena in the 2017 Regional Head Election in Bekasi Regency indicates that trade unions as political machine in the formal political. This study uses a qualitative approach with an explanatory type by conducting in-depth interviews as primary data and literature studies and various other documents as secondary data. The findings of this study were two important efforts by FSPMI as a political unionism in electoral arena. First, in the context of internal roles, trade unions sought to optimize various supports from various trade unions. This situation described that FSPMI transformed the identity of union members as workers towards as citizens. Second, the external role is that FSPMI sought to build broader alliances with various non-labor groups to ensure support and solidarity between classes in the electoral arena. However, these efforts have experienced failures and obstacles due to the capacity of trade unions, trade union fragmentation, and pragmatic voters in the electoral arena that are beyond the control of trade unions. Another finding of this study was a new form of the concept of political unionism and it different from the concept of political unionism which has been developing with the engagement of political parties. The new form of the trade union as a political unionism is without engagement with political parties and occurs due to democratization space and is followed by political opportunities regulated in the rules of the election."
