Matrix analytic methods are popular as modeling tools because they give one the ability to construct and analyze a wide class of queuing models in a unified and algorithmically tractable way. The authors present the basic mathematical ideas and algorithms of the matrix analytic theory in a readable, up-to-date, and comprehensive manner. In the current literature, a mixed bag of techniques is used-some probabilistic, some from linear algebra, and some from transform methods. Here, many new proofs that emphasize the unity of the matrix analytic approach are included. The authors begin by describing several examples of quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes. These examples give the reader an idea of the variety of models which are hidden by the general block notation as well as reinforce some of the terminology and notation used throughout the text. These same examples are used as illustrations later. The second part of the book deals with phase-type distributions and related-point processes, which provide a versatile set of tractable models for applied probability. Part three reviews birth-and-death processes, and points out that the arguments for these processes carry over to more general processes in a parallel manner and are based on Markov renewal theory. Part four covers material where algorithmic and probabilistic reasoning are most intimately connected. In three steps, the authors take you from one of the simplest iterative procedures to the fastest, relating the successive approximations to the dynamic behavior of the stochastic process itself. The final part goes beyond simple QBDs with a sequence of short chapters where the authors discuss various extensions to the analyzed processes. Their intention is to show that the fundamental ideas extend beyond simple homogeneous QBD.

This book provides an introduction to basic queuing systems, such as M/M/1 and its variants, as well as newer concepts like systems with priorities, networks of queues, and general service policies. Numerical examples are presented to guide readers into thinking about practical real-world applications, and students and researchers will be able to apply the methods learned to designing queuing systems that extend beyond the classroom.

ABSTRACT
One of the traffic problems is the management of emergency vehicles, such as fire trucks and ambulances, that need to have priority access to intersection. Generally, pre-emptive control of the traffic light is employed to for such cases. However, nowadays, the implementation of pre-emptive rule is not sufficient to accommodate emergency vehicles need to cross the intersection with minimum delay and hence could reach the designated destination within the expected time. Additional method is required to properly handle this issue. This research proposes a new model for accelerated discharging of traffic in front of the emergency vehicle at an intersection based on queuing theory and historical data. Queueing model of M/M/1, M/G/1 and G/G/1 is analytically studied and compared. SRH algorithm is then developed to determine which G/G/1, among Kreamer-Lagenbach-Belz, Kingman, and Whitt approach, that fits the model. Two indicators are introduced in the model, namely the effective speed of normal vehicles on the road and traveling time of the emergency vehicle. Further, to model effective speed of normal vehicles traffic in front of emergency vehicle linear and exponential acceleration formula are derived and validated. Historical data are utilized to develop pattern that represents relationship between the speed of normal vehicle and its position in the queue-tail. At the emergence of emergency vehicle this pattern is used to determine whether or not the normal traffic should be speed up. The proposed model has been validated and tested against a model that does not include acceleration mode. Our model outperforms such model by 4.5 to 5.3 times on average. That is, in terms of traveling time of the emergency vehicle, to guarantee that emergency vehicles do not experience significant delay.

Postur rangkaian kerja dianalisis melalui Posture Evaluation Index (PEI).
Abstract
This research studies the ergonomic aspect from toll booth and operators performance. It focused on two main areas, working posture and service time of operators. The analysis of working posture based on Posture Evaluation Index, meanwhile service time using the queuing theory. The output of the study can be divided into ergonomic design and method reengineering. The results suggest that the most ergonomic design which has the lowest value of PEI is with 51 cm in seat height, 5 cm in foot rest height, and 80 cm in table height. For the queuing simulation, the implementation of new configuration and method can reduce the average time of costumer spend in the queue until 82%.
