It uses straightforward language supported by copious block-schematic diagrams so that non-engineers and engineers alike can learn about the principles of fixed and mobile telecommunications networks carrying voice and data. The book covers all aspects of today?s networks, including how they are planned, formed and operated, plus next generation networks and how they will be implemented.
After an introductory chapter on telephony the book briefly describes all of today?s networks ? PSTN, mobile, cable television, the Internet, etc. ? and considers how they interconnect. Individual chapters then consider the principles, technologies and network structures relating to transmission, circuit switching, signalling and control, data (including voice-over-IP) networks, and mobile networks. The important subject of numbering and addressing for telephony and IP is then covered.

"Berkembangnya trend konvergensi antara industri komputer, Informasi dan komunikasi salah satunya adalah VoIP, sehingga berkembang menjadi suatu bisnis. Untuk itu bisnis VoIP membutuhkan strategi yang tepat agar dapat bersaing dalam bisnis VoIP ini.
Penelitian ini bermaksud menganalisis kondisi lingkungan eksternal dan internal yang dihadapi oleh PT. XYZ dan memetakan posisi persaingan/ competitive position PT. XYZ. Faktor-faktor utama yang dapat dijadikan penyusunan strategi dengan berbasis kompetensi inti untuk digunakan oleh PT. XYZ, merancang dan menemukan arsitektur strategik dalam bisnis VoIP, sehingga dapat dijadikan sebagai arahan dan petunjuk dalam pengembangan strategi.
Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian deskriptif analitis. Populasi penelitian adalah para karyawan yang dinilai ahli dan berkompeten. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara riset pustaka dan lapangan melalui daftar kuesioner dilanjutkan dengan menggunakan wawancara tidak terstruktur. Penelitian ini menggunakan aliran strategi konfigurasi, dengan aliran posisi untuk memposisikan diri (PT.XYZ) dan aliran pembelajaran guna pengembangan strategi.
Analisis strategi mengenai lingkungan eksternal dan internal menggunakan aliran posisi yang berbasis pasar/market based dengan memetakan Matriks General Electric. Sedangkan pada tahap pengembangan strategi bisnis VoIP dengan menggunakan aliran pembelajaran yang berbasis sumber dayalresource based dengan mengidentifikasikan kompetensi inti yang ada dan yang dibutuhkan pada PT. XYZ, dilanjutkan dengan memetakan pohon kompetensi inti bisnis VoIP pada PT. XYZ, yang pada akhirnya dapat mengetahui implementasi dan pengembangan strategi bisnis VoIP. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa produk atau Iayanan inti PT.XYZ adalah sistem, jaringan dan komunikasi. Sedangkan kompetensi inti yang dikembangkan adalah manajemen operasional, fleksibilitas, dan pengembangan sumber daya manusia perusahaan.
Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, disarankan agar PT.XYZ menciptakan kompetensi isi pada jalur kompetensi proses, mengadakan analisis pada Iingkungan internal agar dapat ditingkatkan secara cermat, bagian sumber daya manusia, dan pelatihan sebaiknya ditingkatkan, mengembangkan jaringan kerja sama pada pihak pemasok (akses dan perizinan), pengembangan keunggulan bersaing dengan pendekatan kompetensi inti. Di samping itu, mempertimbangkan penggunaan aliran lainnya di dalam pengembangan strategi bersaingnya scbagai bagian dari penggunaan aliran konfigurasi."
