Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menilai faktor-faktor yang berhubungan dengan tingkat sanitasi pada kapal yang sandar di pelabuhan Pangkalbalam, Pangkalpinang, pada tahun 2005. Desain penelitian ini adalah potong lintang (Crossectional). Populasinya adalah semua kapal kargo yang sandar di pelabuhan Pangkalbalam, sedangkan sampel pada penelitian ini sebanyak 92 kapal kargo yang diambil secara acak. Rata-rata kapal kargo yang sandar di pelabuhan Pangkalbalam, yang mempunyai tingkat sanitasi kapal baik sebesar 16,3 %, tingkat sanitasi kapal sedang sebanyak 18,5 %, sedangkan tingkat sanitasi kapal yang buruk sebesar 65,2%. Hasil ini memperlihatkan bahwa tingkat sanitasi pada kapal-kapal yang sandar di pelabuhan Pangkalbalam masih rendah. Standar prosedur operasional, (OR = 98,3), kepemimpinan nahkoda (OR = 22,7) dan waktu yang digunakan untuk peningkatan sanitasi kapal (OR = 24,1), secara signifikan berhubungan dengan tingkat sanitasi pada kapal yang sandar di pelabuhan Pangkalbalam. Selanjutnya berdasarkan hasil analisis multi variabel yang paling berhubungan terhadap peningkatan sanitasi kapal adalah variabel standar prosedur operasional dengan nilai OR yang sudah dikontrol sebesar 21,01. Dengan hasil penelitian ini diharapkan setiap kapal kargo yang sandar di pelabuhan Pangkalbalam mempunyai standar prosedur operasional yang baik. Untuk mengontrol standar prosedur operasional tersebut perlu supervisi/pengawasan yang rutin dari petugas sanitasi kantor kesehatan pelabuhan Pangkalpinang.
