 Abstrak

ABSTRACT
Bandung city was founded by R.A. Wiranatakusumah I1, the sixth regent of Bandung (1794 _ 1829). It was originally a traditional city that was established as the center of the governmental regency. The result of the study concluded that 25 September 1810 is the birth of the city. So, the date is considered as the starting point of social changes of the city in the nineteenth century. The social changes in Bandung in 1810 _ 1906 were caused due to the interaction of many factors. Among these factors involved three aspects : authority, city physic, and social economic. The first authority was held by both bupati (regent) and governor general/resident. Both authorities influenced the change process of the physic of the city and its sosial economic. So, the interaction of one aspect to the others is the basic pattern of the changes. he process of the changes lasted in three phases. Each was based on the city function. First, as the capital of the regency (1810 _ 1864). The second, as the capital of the residency as well as the first function (1864 _ 1884), and third as the center of the train transportation of ""West Line"", as well as playing the role of the first and the second functions (1884 _ 1906). The changes of the first phase was slow, but it was faster on the second phase and fastest on the last phase. The main factors that supported the speed of the third phase were the train tranportation (technological factor), and the foreign businessmen as well as the social institution who took the important role in developing city. It is concluded that the social change of Bandung city from 1810 to 1906 had unilinear character, that was from traditional condition to the modern condition."
