ABSTRACT Movie is not only a medium of entertainment, but it is also a way of deliveringmessages, representation, and social criticism. Lewat Djam Malam (1954), writtenby Usmar Ismail, is one of Indonesian films which has social criticism. It isinteresting to see how young generations make sense of a movie from differenteras and understand the ideas of the movie with the current context and itsprevious knowledge. Applying Stuart Hall?s theory, the encoding-decoding(reception analysis), we can see how young people construct post-revolutionIndonesia. There are three positions of audiences in this theory: opposition, dominant, and negotiated. In reception theory, contextual factors influenceaudiences read texts on media, such as identity, perception, social background, history, and political issues. In this research, the subjects were members ofinterpretive community, in which each of them actively interpret the texts andhave similar interests to the content. The results showed that audiences agreedLewat Djam Malam (LDM) is still relevant to current conditions. Someone whohas limited knowledge of Indonesian history tends to take a dominant position. Hecompletely agrees to what is conveyed by the encoder. Moreover, a person whohas knowledge of Indonesian history and politics fairly and actively explores theidea in a movie, interprets this movie as negotiated. There are values in LDM thatis not in line with them, but they still can accept. Reality constructions of postrevolutionIndonesia depicted in this movie are the various characters on LDM,the economic situation constructed in a stable condition, do not fit the situation ofpost-revolution Indonesia. Social and political situations are illustrated by thecurfew to maintain security, differences of lifestyle between middle and lowerclasses, corruption, prostitution, nationalization of foreign companies and variousconditions of ex-soldiers adapting in new situation, the independence ofIndonesia. |
