[Selama ini banyak yang beranggapan bahwa Cina Benteng adalah Cina Peranakan yang menetap di daerah Tangerang Namun beberapa anggotanya di Desa Situgadung awalnya menolak hal itu dan mengidentifikasi diri mereka sebagai Orang Keturunan Melalui proses panjang mereka akhirnya mengaku bahkan bangga sebagai Cina Benteng sejak akhir tahun 1980 rsquo an Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif penelitian ini memberikan pemahaman baru tentang konsep identitas etnis dan pembedaan antara keduanya Identitas adalah sebuah proses mengidentifikasi kolektivitas yang menjadi acuan dimana individu berperan penting untuk menentukan kolektivitas mana yang merupakan alter ego nya Sementara etnisitas merupakan salah satu bentuk kolektivitas dimana kelompoklah yang menetapkan keanggotaan seorang individu. It is generally assumed that Cina Benteng is a community of Peranakan Chinese living around Tangerang However one its communities in Situgadung Village rejected that notion in which they refer themselves as Orang Keturunan Eventually they identified themselves as Cina Benteng in the 1980s. This research gives a new understanding on ethnic identity and the differentiation between identity and ethnicity Identity is defined as a process where each individual plays a significant role to identify a collectivity in which he she feels belonged to while ethnicity is one of the manifestations of collectivities in which the society determine an individual's collectivity.
