The real life of monks actually is a life of meditation, which dissociate their selvesfrom various worldly elements and take a middle-way in life. Specifically, it isabout reaching equillibrium between the spiritual and the worldy life, not torturingthe body, and taking into account each individual’s basic needs, except for theneed of sexuality. However, the life of monks in Ekayana Arama Monastery is adifferent matter. First of all, they have to involve themselves into many activities, such as ritual services, funeral, school, blessing, etc. Second, there are not enoughnumber of monks compared to the number of followers outside the monastery. The condition leads to disciplinary process, surveillance and control from themonastery to every monk there, which is really distinctive from the other placeslike Thailand, Burma or Vietnam monastery that uses seminary or class system todiscipline the body of the monks. The mindful life method, which can be referred to engage buddhism, then becomea respond to the problem, the monks can still practice between every busyactivities that running in everyday life. Beside that, that method does not changereligious disposition of the monks formed by the institutions as illustrated byGeertz about mood and motivation. Further, I want to analyze the case in EkayanaArama Monastery with post structuralist approach through the concept ofdiscourse by Michel Foucault which create power over individual’s body. Last, this writing ended by the analysis of the formation process of religious dispositionas a result of practice that occurs within a religious institution through theexplanation from Talal Asad. The Ethnographic research was carried out based onqualitative research which includes techniques of in-depth interview andparticipant observation.] |
