Ternary alloys Zr-Mo-Nb are being investigated for application as biomaterial. Zr-Mo-Nb powders were mixed in various composition, compacted and sintered in argon atmosphere and various temperature and holding time. Pellet samples sized 2 cm diameter and 0.65 cm thickness were characterized and investigated. Characterization consisted of density, porosity, XRD analysis, analysis of microstructure, SEM analysis and SBF(Simulated Body Fluid) test. Ternary alloy Zr-xMo-yNb showed optimum value of density, porosity, and hardness at maximum 6%Mo and 3% Nb. Result indicated desired phase of ternary alloy Zr-xMo-yNb was α Zr phase as major phase which has good biocompatibility. There were also another phases such as Mo2Zr, αZr+(Mo,Nb)2Zr as intermetallic phases, ZrO2 and βZr phases. At temperature 1200ᵒC and holding time for 4 hours will give most optimum result in terms of desired response. The more content of Mo (>6%) and Nb (>3%), indicated an increase for porosity, reduced density and hardness. However, ternary metal alloy Zr-xMo-yNb will fulfil the requirement as biomaterial, because during 4 weeks experiment of soaking each sample in hydroxyapatite solution, each was giving spectrum detection of O-H, C-H and P-O as components of hydroxyapatite that precipitated on the surface of each sample. |
