It has been proved that helminth infections can affect severaldiseases development through immunoregulation and metabolic processes. Clinicalspectrum of leprosy has been known to depends on the host immune response againstMycobacterium leprae, so that helminths may have a role in clinical manifestation ofleprosy and erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL).Purpose : To know the proportion of helminth infections in leprosy and theirassociation with leprosy type and ENL.Methods: Analytical study was performed with cross-sectional design onpausibacillary (PB) and multibacillary (MB) type leprosy patients. Fecal sampleswere collected from all subjects, which then analyzed with direct microscopicexamination, formalin-ether sedimentation technique, and Kato-Katz.Results: 81 subjects were enrolled in this study, consists of 20 PB type patients and61 MB type patients. History or episode of ENL was found in 31 subjects. Helminthinfections were found in 11 MB subjects (13,6 %), consists of Trichuris trichiura (5subjects) and Strongyloides stercoralis (6 subjects). Eight of 11 subjects (25,8 %)with helminth infections had a history or episode ENL. There were significantassociations between helminth infections with leprosy type and ENL (p= 0,034 danp=0,018).Conclusion: There were significant associations between helminth infections withleprosy type and ENL.] |
