This undergraduate thesis aims to analyze woman’s body issues on posts related to No Bra Daymovement. Basically, this movement assembles female netizens to fight breast cancer togetherby taking off their bras for a day. As it started globally on October 13th, 2013, this movementattracts pro and con responses, including pros and cons. The responses are linked by the use ofrelated hashtags. Due to its challenge to bring women’s body to the public sphere, this movementis oftentimes underestimated. On the contrary, this movement brings a new meaning on women’sbody. This encoded meaning cannot be absorbed thoroughly by the female netizens because ofthe patriarchal construction. The achieved meaning cannot be one hundred percent as it aims to.Furthermore, the decoded meaning still shows the affirmation to patriarchal order. As a mediaproduct, reception theory by Stuart Hall and postmodern feminism by Luce Irigaray are used toexamine the new meaning interpreted and reflected in the responses, which also show theaffirmation or even internalization to the patriarchal order.] |
